OBP's!!!!! A sad day at a Thrift store Last viewed: 1 day ago

Passed a thrift store today and caught out of my eye a set of drums on the sidewalk. Turned around to go take a peek.

Happened to be(at one time) a 1969 set of Ludwig 13-16-22 in OBP! Upon close inspection, these were completely roached! The finish was badly faded, perhaps from smoke and age, the shell re-rings were separated, no bottom rims. Badly moisture damaged. The chrome was beyond bringing back. The badges were actually present on all three drums and close 6xxxxx. I could make out the date stamp inside the 13, Jan. 15, 1969!

By this time I was almost crying about what could have been. This has never happened to me before. These were beyond repair or restoration. Perhaps the badges were usable, that was about it.

I talked to the owner who asked me to "talk to me". So, as it is my style, I proceeded to explain to him and breakdown the endless issues to him. What do you think they're worth? he said. Well, whatever someone will pay you, I responded.

As I drove away, my wife consoled me.

A sad day indeed.

I have not heard you say extra holes , wrap that's faded can be brought back to some degree chrome can be replaced , granted its 2 nd gen Obp , still worth $$$ there is nothing to shot to restore that's what we do its just another challenge ....

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Trust me, the wrap was barely recognizable as OBP. The shells, because there was moisture damage, and there had been no bottom heads on for God knows how long, were separating at the plies on the bottom and were split on all three shells. Not even recut table bearing edges. The chrome that was there was even worse from the moisture. Believe me, if I thought I could have saved any of it, I'd have made him an offer.

Those sat way too long in a wet basement or somewhere they shouldn't have been.

I've never seen something so bad.

So true!

I have never seen anything like it. It saddened me to a degree I've never felt before.

Guess I'm so far into this hobby, there is no turning back.Violin
