Odd Slingerland configuration...??? Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Hey!

I picked up a Slingerland kit this weekend: 1972, WMP, garage sale price. Anyways, the sizes are a bit off from what I've seen or been able to find online, so I was hoping somebody could help me out with identifying an outfit name or whatever. The drums were bought together, so it's not an orphan kit...

22x12 bass drum

13x9 rack tom

16x14 rack tom (just one tom mount, no leg brackets or holes)

...any thoughts?

Definitely not a cataloged outfit with a name! The 22x12 was still in the catalogs. The 16x14 is an odd one, especially with a tom mount! Normally, this was the floor tom size offered for the Stage Band series, with snare drum lugs mounted in the middle of the shell. Really sounds like this was a custom order. Can you post pictures?

That combination of sizes is certainly unusual. That 16x14 (16" diameter and 14" deep?) might be converted marching tenor drum. If the drum is 14" diameter by 16" deep, that is a wonderful size for a floor tom. My 1965 Walberg and Auge set is configured with a 14x22 bass drum, 9x13 mounted tom, and 16 deep x 14 diameter floor tom.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I have a Slingerland orphan early 60's set: 12x20 BD; 16x14 FT; 8x12 TT. The shallow depth BD is a gem as is the extra deep 14" FT.

Never play it the same way once.

I agree that the 16" deep x 14" diameter floor tom is terrific--maybe my favorite floor tom. I have not had any 12" deep bass drums to know if they sound any different than the 14" depth bass drums.

Thanks guys! I figured it was some sort of "one off" kit.

I got it from the original owner. I swung back by his house today to see if he could tell me about how he ordered it, like from a catalog or whatever. He said it was sitting in the local music shop, and he liked the white pearl covering, so he bought it. Get this--he didn't even mount the floor tom, he just put it on a box next to the bass drum! He didn't know they usually came with legs! I guess I got there shortly after he sold his cymbals...I can only imagine what they were, or what THEY sold for!
