Old Ludwig Bass drum age and finish? Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

I have a question concerning the age and finish of my Ludwig Bass Drum and matching Toms. I understand the Toms were imported from China for Ludwig but I have never seen a finish like this on any other set. It belonged to my Grandfather who owned it in the thirties. My Dad said it was the only color he ever remembers and he just turned eighty. It was probably repainted to match but I don't know that for sure.

I look forward to what the drum experts on this forum have to say about the drums.

I recently cleaned up the bass brum and re wired the lights for the ultimate drum cave night light!

Check out the pictures of them at a wedding gig in San Francisco. 30's -40's?

No badge, the tube lugs washers say Ludwig and Ludwig Chicago. Thats the only markings.

The Tension rods on the bass drum look more like Leedy parts. Same with the finish on the bass drum. I've never seen a L+L bass drum with those parts on it.

The "Chinese toms" were used mainly until tuneable toms appeared in the mid to late 1930's. My guess for age would be early 1930's.

In the past, I have found outfits from that era with Leedy bass drums and L+L snares and side toms. Both drum companies were owned by the same parent company at that time.

Of course, with the scroll pattern black beauty as part of the outfit, I could be 10 years late on my guesstimate, and the bass drum could very well be a L+L, if so, a much earlier model than I've ever seen.

That's not a factory finish but rather, a "do-it-yourself" paint job. Same with the painted head. It appears to be a copy of an original factory design.
