Old Ludwig Pioneer Snare - What would you do? Last viewed: 13 hours ago

So, I've got this old Pioneer snare with W.F. Ludwig's autograph in it. I've had it around for a while and I was thinking of getting the restoration going. Any ideas on where to go with it? Just clean up and play or would you guys wrap it up? The nickle hardware looks like it might be a bit hard to shine up, and I need a top hoop. The rest is all there. I don't think I'll do much more to the interior other than give it a good wipe since the date stamp is still there as is the autograph. I'm bettin that snare was painted rather than wrapped originally due to the maple exterior.

I'd go black or white lacquer, or black@gold or blue@silver Duco....

Nice drum, man !!

I was thinking the same thing. A nice black lacquer paint job, & clear reso head so you can see the autograph. The nickel should clean up with some hand work. Then....play it...marko

I like the black lacquer idea but, I like the idea of a black & gold Duco paint job better! Sell it to me! I'll throw it on the turntable and have it looking, 'showroom' in no time!

As far as the autograph goes, it's cool, but you might want to know that Ludwig signed a lot of drums as a business practice. For a few years when he had the WFL company, he signed the calfskin on all the tom heads, I believe. So, it's not really an autograph so much as it was like Ludwig's personal form of quality assurance. You definitely don't want to cover it up, but just so you know, it's not rare to find that. Anyway, just an FYI.

That's a sixties drum I believe, and the signature is dated 1996.

Probably signed at a drum show or similar event.

Fuse - I'm aware that there are many signed Ludwig pieces out there (I own a few and have seen very, very many). The signature actually looks like WFL 3. The two sticks are very close together, but it's definitely III as far as I can tell, unless he botched it. I'm not under any delusions that it's rare, but it is pretty cool, so I'm not going to touch the interior.

Purdie - I'm really liking the black/gold duco idea. What type of paint would you use in this application? I'm guessing you wouldn't remove the badge to do this... or would you?

Clean it up, outside and edges (wash, wax, polish) or wrap, refinish as you choose.

Lightly brush the inside with a dry soft brush.

DO NOT do anything else to the inside. You might damage signature, making it less valuable.

IMHO a white or black MP would look excellent.
