Old Rogers Shells Beyond Repair? Help!!!1 Last viewed: 11 minutes ago

Loading...

So I was really excited to pick up these shells fill some holes and graduate to a new level of restoration greatness!!!!... until I got a good look at em....boy what a mess! Plenty of new holes to be filled which I am okay with but was not expecting the massive edge damage to the floor tom and rack tom. Which I must admit I have never tackled before. They were poorly re-wrapped and covered the lower lugs making them concert toms essentially but once the wrap is off all the original lug holes are there. They appear to be drilled for Beavertails which is good. The tags were painted over and cannot be read on the 13x9 and Kick number 2. These 2 drums also seem to me to feel different then the floor tom and kick which have original tags but are different holiday tags.Kick one has the best chance at survival at this point....Oh and the drums with the painted tags do still have the outline of the tag inside them with the same measurements as Rogers holiday tags.So take a look and let me know if they are beyond repair and any suggestions/info would be great!

First our friend the floor tom.

Thats one beyond anything I would take on.

The 49xxx number puts it into late 64.

I have repaired shells like this in the pass..On your floor tom and mounted tom. This is the way i have fixed shells like this in the pass.First cut out bad spot of the shell say on your floor tom cut it out the shell an inch on each side of the bad spot and 3 inchs down the side.Cut a new piece the same size from another rogers shell glue the new piece in the shell clamp it with "U" clamps with pieces of wood-{one on inside of shell one on outside of shell]- from a shell to keep the new piece in place.....Mikey

Those can be repaired, but it will take some skill. There are a few different ways to go: you could cut a piece of shell from another drum and glue it in place as described above. Or, you can build those areas up with wood putty, like Plastic Wood, and reshape the edge. Those edges look pretty rough all around, so recutting might be needed on a few of them after the putty job is done. The extra holes can be patched with plugs from a donor shell. All of this will take time and patience and skill.

If they had the original wrap it might be worth the trouble, but since they have already been rewrapped I don't believe it would be worth the effort - unless you have a lot of time on your hands and you're interested in embarking on a crusade.

And yes, Rogers did drill for mounting hardware near the rering which required cutting into the ring at times.

By the way, star washers were years in the future when that Cleveland drum was built: that's a case of wrong era hardware being put on the drum somewhere along the way...

Total Disaster! crying2-07

I would take off reinforcing rings, repaired them, then cut shells to smaller sizes, especially bass drum.

Re-wrap everything.
