Old Snare Identification Help Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

I ended up with this snare as part of a recent red Ludwig Vistalite lot. It only says 3 Way on the strainer with not other identifying names or brand anywhere. It is a 4 x 14 nickel over brass shell with a vertical seam and has a thin veneer on the inside that is attached by the lug screws. Also has actual snare beds.

Anyone know what brand it might be? Any help would be appreciated.

I had a Leedy snare a few years ago around the same era and for the life of me I saw no ID on it until ever so faintly I recognized an engraving on one of the hoops. Maybe get out the magnifying glass? Nice pickup though!

I believe your snare drum is a Wilson Bros. circa 1918- early 1920's manufactured in Chicago, IL. This is based on my owning an identical drum with a Wilson Bros. Mnfg. Co. paper tag attached onto the internal shell wooden strip. If memory serves it is a thin brass welded shell measuring approx. 4 1/2" depth x 14" diameter, six all solid brass tube lugs. I was never able to achieve a truly modern sound from the drum, but after working with it a lot achieved a nice snare for brush work and ragtime music. A quality drum for its day and time, and a collectible piece. There is at least one Wilson Bros. catalog reprint online where you can identify the exact model. Hope this is of some help.

That sure looks like the one. Thanks, now I have to come up with snare strainer lever throw-off that is missing on mine.
