Hello. I have a Ludwig snare drum that once belonged to my grandfather. As near as I can tell it was made in 1917?? Its ~ 5" X 15" It has six lugs and flat hoops. It was painted grey and is missing the strainer hardware. It has Ludwig and Ludwig stamped on the top hoop and on the inside of the drum. If I post pictures would it be possible for the experts on this forum to help me get more information about it and possibly hardware for it? Also, is it possible to buy calf skin heads anymore? Thanks to all that reply.

yes to all your questions! please post the pics of the drum :) maybe this link will help? http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/other_stuff/bill_ludwigiii/ludwig_1923_4.jpg
I have attached some pictures. Thanks!
Vintage2000, Are you able to tell me anything about my drum based on the pictures? Thanks.
What you have is an early 1920's Ludwig & Ludwig Separate Tension Wood Shell snare drum. The drum was produced from 1914 to 1924-26 and would have had Ludwig's first production strainer on it that would have had a round badge at the top stamped Ludwig and Ludwig Chicago. I can't find any reference to the strainer after 1924 in Ludwig literature so I would say the the newest your drum would possibly be is 1926. It was originally available with a walnut or mahogany finish and the ones produced from 1924-26 had the option of a Deluxe finish and gold plated hardware. Original depths were 4", 5" or 6.5" and in 14" or 15" diameters with all drums looking t be 6 lugs. The strainer might be hard to find and isn't one that I see popping up very often at all so just remember that the hunt is half the fun. :D
As for the calfskin heads, I make those and ship them world wide so contact me via PM if you want the drum reheaded. You can send me the old heads and I can re-skin the original flesh hoops so that we already know that they will fit.
Hope this helps.
Thank you very much for the reply. I appreciate you taking the time to do it. At this point I am not sure what I will do with it. Obviously it needs to be restored. What kind of money (ballpark) are we talking for new calfskin heads? I have another Ludwig set as well that I might want to put calfskin heads on. Thanks again.
For 15" heads they would be $65.00 each plus shipping and I could do a 6 mil. batter side head and a 3 mil snare side head. I believe there are a few people on the site that have used my calfskin heads or have seen them if you wanted to check to see how they liked it. If you are buying heads for an entire kit I can do a better package price for you. Let me know. Good luck with the restoration, post lots of pictures and don't be afraid to ask questions here if you need to, there is a pretty knowledgeable group of people here that are always willing to lend a hand or just admire the progress shots.
Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it!
