OldKentuckyDrums still selling grommet tools? Last viewed: 51 minutes ago

From mchair303

I use JamminSam's grommet tool with excellent results. It also employs the tighten-bolt method like Kentucky Home's, but it was included free along with the grommets in a wrap purchase. I believe he only sends the grommet tool with a purchase. You can't buy one outright.Mike

The Jammin' Sam tool can be assembled for about $3.00 at the

hardware store (it's pictured on his website). It shouldn't be

compared to the the tool sold by MOKD and Chicago Drum Exchange.

At one time, I used the hardware-store variety (works best if

tightened with a small air / impact wrench) but the MOKD version

does a superior job and doesn't risk distorting the grommet.

If I had to install only one grommet, I'd muddle along with the

hardware-store version or use the ball bearing/hammer method.

My MKOD tool has paid for itself many times over.

I've used the homemade version in the past to some success...Since I bought the tool that MOKD sells and I would never go back using it...Very professional results with the MOKD tool...

Just my 2 cents...

Cheers

I will respect the opinions of the folks who speak well of the tool from the Kentucky people. I haven't done many rewraps. I may never do another one. So, the ball peen hammer method is good enough for me.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

What is the proper length of the grommet, meaning the length of the grommet that extends past the inside of the shell, for a good looking install? I read not too long, not too short, but is there something a little more specific for a badge-installing-newbie?

Is it like 1/8", which is about what I was thinking?

Have a wonderful evening

Generally, between 1/16" and 1/8" for the radius inside the shell depending on the brand of drum...

For Ludwig, you can purchase the proper size grommet according to the number of plies the shell has...MOKD sells the grommets in both chrome and brass...I believe they also sell Slingy replacement grommets as well...

The trick with installing badges with grommets is not to over-tighten them...This will cause distortion in the badge...It can also make the inside radius "dig" to far into the shell...

In case you haven`t seen it yet, here`s a video that Forum member poppy made awhile ago...

The key to the MOKD one is the way those two compression nuts have that flare machined into them. That is why it is a $40 tool rather than a $5 one. I've assembled my own from hardware store parts, and also had one from Jammin' Sam. I finally broke down and spent the money on the machined one and the difference was night and day. The result looks "factory". I've only used it a couple of times so far but, even so, it was worth the money IMO.
