Opinions on lug size for new Ludwig Maple Classic kit! Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hi All!

Haven't spent as much time on VDF lately, due to lots of computer work!

Next, I realize this is not a "vintage" question, but the kit I'm asking about would have a definite "vintage" vibe!

My girlfriend and I were in Hollywood last Saturday and stopped in at Pro Drum Shop. Always great kits! Anyway, my girlfriend saw a new Ludwig Legacy kit in Black Galaxy Sparkle and is now trying to convince me to add a kit in this color to my collection! The Legacy's are way to expensive, but I'm considering the Classic Maple series in Downbeat sizes. My question:

For the sake of authenticity, should I go with mini-classic lugs on the 8x12 tom and the larger Classic lugs on the 14x20 bass drum and 14x14 floor tom? What are your thoughts?

Also, I would get the vintage-style curved spurs for the bass and also install a Ludwig rail consolette. Not the new contraption, but the second generation rail with ratchet, not the clock-face version.

I would also have the tom bracket mounted directly on the shell for authenticity, and not use the Vibra-band.

Average discounts are running 35%, but Midwest Percussion is offering an additional 20% through July 4. That's a pretty good deal!

Also forgot to mention that the snare drum can be ordered with 8 lugs instead of 10. Can you say "Jazz Festival"?!!

Thanks to all for your input!

You are right on the lugs but I am not sure you can get the curved spurs on a 20" bass, might have to order it without any and have the drum shop install them for you. If you are really wanting that vintage vibe go with the Maxwell rail, looks like the vintage but much better.

And, can I borrow your girlfriend!!

Ludwig will not put curved spurs on a 20" bass drum. I would check into seeing if you can get the legs they use on ther new club date SE drums. Those are just like 60's ones. I would also definately get the small lugs on the 12 and large everywhere else.

I have the new Ludwig rail on TWO sets and I love it. Here is my CM 22,13,16 5x14 "1970" tribute set in champ sparkle. Only had them a few weeks and I am waiting on a matching canister. Good luck!

Lucky and wflkurt! Thanks for your comments and opinions!

So far, it's +2 about mini lugs on 12" tom and Classic lugs on the bass and floor tom.

I was not aware about the issue with the curved spurs on 20" and smaller bass drums. There's no mention of this on the "Configuration Guide", which allows you to configure each drum the way you want... within Ludwig's limits of course! I'll look into the spur issue. If needed, I'll have them included and drilled for later.

As to the rail mount, I have Maxwell's rail on my 1967 Slingerland kit and it works great. However, for the Ludwig kit, I'd really prefer Ludwig's 4-point rail for a bit more stability. I have a brand new Maxwell upper section (which he does not sell separately) and a near-new Ludwig 4-point rail, both of which will look great on the bass drum.

wflkurt... my only issue with Ludwig's newer rail is that, IMO, it's just too bulky looking, with too many parts. I'm not saying it doesn't work great, just that I feel it would detract from the "vintage vibe" I'm trying to recreate. Thanks for posting the picture of your kit. It looks great!

Yeah, my girlfriend definitely shares my enthusiasm for drums! Sure makes it easier to justify spending money on my hobby! I think I'll keep her to myself! LoLoLoLo

Just checked with Midwest Percussion and you are correct about the spurs! Turns out Ludwig won't do it simply because they feel it doesn't look good! However, they will provide the spurs and I can have my drum tech install them.

Artie at MWP will call Ludwig to inquire about consecutive serial number badges. That would be cool! I know that Black Galaxy Sparkle is available, but doesn't show on the Configuration Guide. Artie will check on this for me. I'll keep everyone posted!

I find it interesting that Ludwig won't put curved spurs on a 20" bass drum. I just picked up a 20" Ludwig Blue/Olive from about 79/80 and it has the curved spurs. They are somewhat close to one of the bottom lugs so the piece that you turn to tighten the spur is facing down toward the back of the drum instead of on top, but it looks fine to me.

I think Ludwig got it right on the newer Gull Wing spurs on the new Clubdates,I think they look real vintagey.I don't know how well they work in practice, but if they hold the drum as well as the curved I would consider them.

I had a CM jazz kit with mini lugs on the small tom. Looked great!

wflkurt, that is a beautiful kit. I may be in the minority here but I like the added visual detail of the isolation gaskets on the lugs especially on lighter colored finishes.

gravy, congrats on the upcoming kit and the girlfriend that is interested in drums.

Mark, long time no hear! You do have a great gal, we both do! They are tolerant of our "affliction". I say large classic on all, but thats me! Can't wait to see the kit!

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....
