I love Ludwig. But if I was buying a gigging kit that was on the smallish side, I'd buy a Sonor kit. I cannot believe how good my son's Sonor kit sounds with the 16" bass drum. Fantastic. I got it for 500 including starter cymbals and Gibraltar stands. It sounds GREAT. Just another option. -Doug

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the reply!

I already have Sonor "jungle/bop" gigging kit that consists of only kick and snare, so the Sonors are out for me.

And yes, i agree Sonors Force 2007 Birch kick sounds great !

The 18x17.5 kick is a little cannon, and sounds like a 20", and my 5x12 snare sounds great as well..

Thanks to all for the replies.. It seems that the consensus is buy vintage, or buy the modern club date as opposed to the Pearl. However, nothing is written in stone, and anything can happen.. I have a certain budget in mind, and that's what i'm looking for. Affordable, reliable, vintage style drums.. You never know !Yes Sir

Haha, you know us old guys over here...Vintage is gold. I bet if you posted the same thread @ DFO in the general section, you would get a totally different feedback. For the same money, you can get a great old kit because you don't need hardware, cymbals or snare. That being said, i think that the new club dates are sexy. Good luck with your purchase Brotha and keep us posted.

Keep fixing them up...

Form what I am hearing, the new Wood/Fiberglass kits are a slightly different beast than the originals, so to me it's not a case of "the vintage ones are great & the new ones pale in comparison". I'd love to try a set of reissues! The idea of fiberglass in our never-ending Quebec winters makes sense to me and I have a feeling that I'm eventually going to go this route. If I could, it would be .Fiberglass or Phenolic shells. That's just me though....at 48 this year I'm only semi-vintage:D

1964 Ludwig Champagne Super Classic
1970 Ludwig Blue Oyster Super Classic
1977 Rogers Big R Londoner 5 ebony
1972/1978 Rogers Powertone/Big R mix ebony
60's Ludwig Supersensitive
Pearl B4514 COB snare ( the SC snare)
Pearl Firecracker
PJL WMP maple snare
Odds & Sods

Sabians, Paistes, Zildjians, Zyns, UFIPs, MIJs etc
Item may be subject to change!

Yes sir !. I'll definitely keep up the posts. My gut is still telling me to go for the Pearl, but as i said , anything can happen. Selling my Yammies will fund this next purchase, or my tax return, if i get a decent one, that is.. ;) If you find you something you think i'd go for, please keep me posted brutha ! ;)

Her Funky good to hear from you.. As i stated to drumfx, my gut is telling me Pearl, and my buddy at Steve's thinks it would be perfect for my current musical situation. As i also stated in my original comment, it's gonna be tough ! :D

Hey dude ! It hadn't cross my mind to consider Gretsch.

I haven't decided what i'm gonna pick up yet, but i've got to see if

i can get what i'm asking for my drums. Seems there are a lot of ignorant

cheapskates out there with serious gonads to ask what i've been offered so far..DOH
