Orphan Kits Last viewed: 12 seconds ago

Thought this might be fun. I am sure most of us have orphan drums from different trades, purchases, finds, etc. I know some have rewrapped orphans to make a matching kit. What about the nice orphans we can't bear to

mess with. Ever make a kit out of mismatched orphans? Let's see them. Here's mine. This is actually a great sounding kit. I am going to take this one to a gig one night.

Yeah. I had a few Ludwig sparkle toms lying around, so I put together a jellybean kit that I played out a few times. Blue sparkle bass drum, red sparkle floor tom, silver sparkle tom, green sparkle snare...it was lovely!

Cool thread!

All my kits are orphans. Most of them match, or at least that's the goal but there have been some intermediary steps... I just don't have anywhere to keep a collectors grade kit, and finding orphans has been fairly affordable.

Here's what I had set up in my practice space for a while.

'60s 14" Floor Tom from an MIJ kit

'60s 12" Pre-Serial Club Date Tom

'66 20" Down Beat Bass Drum (now up for sale since I just got a silver sparkle Club Date bass drum)

Excuse the bad iPhone photo...never intended anyone to see this but me.

here's my party kit. 1930s(?) Carlton 18" Marching Tenor with clamp on cowbell holders for spurs, 1960s Premier Marching snare converted to 14" FT and a no name MIJ 12" tom. Just add the snare of choice and away you go.

The last three sets I have had were all unmatching orphan kits. I kept the last one, a White-24" Pearl marching bass with no spurs, 13" Gold Sparkle Ludwig, 16" Black Sonor Force 2001. Sounds really good together, and really cheap!

I took a pretty wasted New England White 16x18 Rogers XP8 floor tom, a scratched up Ebony 8s12 Rogers XP8 tom, and a bare 14x14 eight ply keller maple shell........

And made it look like this..... The Swivomatic mounts and hardware are worth more than the drums.

What do you guys think of mismatched kits from the same line? I am working a deal on a set of green sparkle club dates. Looks like someone had a Newyorker setup (12" ride tom and 20" bass drum) and later added a Superclassic 16" floor tom in the same wrap color. Seller is asking $300 and the only issue is some yellowing of the wrap.

ive got several orphan kits. for some reason, I just like putting them together and giving them new life.

ive got a mahogany clubdate orphan kit that I'm still working on. also have a couple kits that were original and complete but I had to find floor toms to complete them. as soon as I find another bass drum in galaxy, i'll have another complete set of galaxy orphans.

here are three that I have. Ludwig 22/13/15 galaxy clubdates, Ludwig 20/12/14 wmp clubdates and wfl/Ludwig 17/12/14 maple clubdates.
