...or anyone who can help with this Ludwig-dating question.

I've attached pics of the shell, and key parts, in question.

It's a 6-lug brass shell, brazed or welded, edges are folded under, beds crimped. Equipped with a 338 strainer, tube lugs. May be a 2-part shell - the last picture shows what may be an outside seam, I'm not sure.

So what do I have here? I'm guessing it's from around 1920 - comments? 2-part shell y/n?

Many people shudder with the thought of cleaning a vintage drum. I note Mike likes to restore a drum to its original glory. I'm tending toward that approach with this - in particular, having the shell buffed and re-lacquered. Comments?

Thanks all.

Hi tubelugs,

By the look of the strainer gut piece I'm thinking 1930s as the gut piece on the earlier models was parallel to the ground...It doesn't look like a 2-pc. shell, more of a light weight 5x14 Universal shell...I think buffing/polishing the brass and a nice coat of clear lacquer will bring that shell back to life and would be a nice contrast to the nickel hardware...I think that re-nickeling the shell would be overkill, especially on a 6 lug snare...These are just my opinions so I suggest that you continue to poll the members here as you will get some good ideas and helpful hints...good luck!
