Paypal question and help Last viewed: 4 hours ago

I've never used Paypal to sell anything. I've got a potential buyer for a drum - $500. He is in Alberta - I'm in B.C.

When he "Sends" money do I get it in my bank account right away - I mean, can I take it out the next day....do I have the actual money? Or, does Paypal hold it back until the buyer receives his drum in a week or so?

Another layer:

I've been back and forth with packing the drum up and going to the post office to see what it is to ship it.....With work and everything this has taken a week. The buyer's Title on emails is "Percussion/Drumset Department Head" at a University Music Program. So it will be easy to check that out. I never even thought to do that until this last email.

I emailed him tonight with my email address for Paypal along with the full price including shipping. He wrote back to say he hasn't used PayPal for years and can't seem to logged on to his account. He said he will email me the money through his bank and asked which address I would like the money to be sent. That sounded a little strange because I just do not know how he can email me money other than through Paypal or WesternUnion. I sent him an email asking him to send me the money via WesternUnion (MoneyMart here in Nanaimo BC). I guess I will see what happens tomorrow.

It's probably all okay - but you always here about elaborate schemes to have you part with your money/goods.

Gary, paypal just a few months ago had a policy if you are not a frequent seller they would hold your money for a certain time then release it after the buyer left your feedback, you can call them and ask them this question. Like myself I sale frequently enough.I am able to transfer the money from my paypal account to my real bank account immediately.

Since it has been a week anyway, have him mail a Canadian Post money order. Take that to the post office and cash it. Then send the drum.

Sounds like "Life Gets In The Way" for both of you

PS - do you have a paypal account already? Othrwise you need to set one up for them to transfer the money.

Like VM2K said about the paypal. It goes straight to your paypal account but I believe after the buyers feedback the funds are available to you for transfer. I've tried to use the funds (from selling) in the paypal account to just pay for bay bought items or even pay the paypal bill but cound not figure out how to do this. I believe you have to transfer the money to your own bank account (which I believe they get a small transfer fund fee). I've sold several items and have never transferred the money yet. As far as needing to check who you're selling to doesn't really matter as long as you have the cash in hand or confirm that it's been deposited to you paypal account, it's all good to go.

Not everyone has a PP account, when buying and selling with poeple you do not know not using PP is it a risk, however you can narrow that risk no doing a few things. first, get a phone number and talk with the guy on the phone, most scammers will not let it get to phone conversations. by talking you get a sense of what their knowledge is about the item, this in itself is a good thing. You as the seller in this case, take on less of a risk. I'll give you an example of what just happened to me. I found a cymbal I wanted on Clist, in another state. I called the seller and he was worried about shipping, getting paid, (he didnt have a PP acount either) I could tell at first he tought i was a scammer. By talking to the guy, I knew I could trust him, my job was to get him to trust me, I said look, I can mail you a Money order, you don't have to ship the item til you cash it. In this case, seller takes on zero risk, the risk was on my end, the buyer. all worked out well. he got his money, I got my cymbal, all is good. but you have to do some homework, G

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Thanks guys

The buyer sent me $530 today via Paypal.

I was able to transfer the money to my personal bank account but clearing for doing that takes 5-7 business days. I called paypal just now (a nice lady in the Philippines spoke to me) - Paypal is using an automated clearing process and that is the way it is. I asked is it possible that the buyer could cancel the payment on his end ....say in a couple of business days.....while the drum is in the mail. She said no....you have to be the one that refunds his money. There is buyer AND seller protection.

I feel a bit better........but I just hate sending a $500 drum off and not being able to spend the money (other than through paypal) haha.

The irony is that I generated a Visa bill when I bought drum stuff on eBay = paid for it with my Visa on Paypal.....I want to pay off the Visa bill using the money I got for selling a drum........now I have to wait for a week or more to do that.....because I'm using Paypal. Wow...I know it's only a few bucks but they seem to get you coming and going hu. The cost of buying stuff when you're poor lol.

Gary link your checking account to your paypal account, then transfer the money to your bank it takes 3 to 4 days that's all. sometimes I get it in two days time.

Mark

I do have my checking account linked to my Paypal account - as I said (or sort of said) above. When I pay for stuff it comes out of my checking OR off my Visa - if I choose - which is also linked to my checking account. When I get a credit or - in this case - someone pays me (this is my first time I sold something through Paypal) the money goes into my Paypal account - then I can transfer the money to my 'linked' checking account. I did that and that's when I got the message saying it went through successfully and it will take 5-7 business days to clear. You're lucky it only takes a couple days and maybe that's because you are in the USA. It's colder in Canada - overall - and things move slower up here haha.
