Pearl Presidents Last viewed: 54 minutes ago

Hi All; I bought an old set of drums out of a guy's basement on a hunch. They turned out to be early Pearl Presidents, phenolic shells 13"T,16"Ft,22"B with date stamps of 1955 and 1957 (shell production date). With help from members of this forum I was able to identify the drums. One week later another set turns up, phenolic shells, 13",16",20" plus a 14" 10-lug phenolic- shell snare drum. This set is covered with black contact paper.?? I think the sets are worth restoring.

My questions to the forum are as follows: Can anyone tell me what year this black set was made or suggest a reference where I can find information on these drums? Does anyone have an idea of what a set like this is worth? Thanks in advance for your help. Jim

1956 and 1957?No,that can't be correct.Diamond lugs came after the Slingy knockoffs,so maybe '66 and '67.As far as the covering, the older Pearl coverings were quite brittle,so it's probably not original. Those are very nice drums-a good score for sure.

Two dates are stenciled on the shells that I uncovered after removing the original 1969 Gold Oyster Pearl wrap. One is '55 the other '57 full dates, day/month/year in black stencil. I'm guessing that was when the shells were produced, not sold as drum sets. I'll be contacting Pearl to see if they have any historical references to these phenolic shells and when they were produced. They were a pre-cursor to fiberglass shells.

The black set is from about 1967-69 with me mod's i see on the bass drum with the set being a re-wraped set missing badge's and maybe missing tom mount arm i would say if you paid more than 100.00 for it you paid to much..I would not pay more than 75.00 for the set...If you re-store the set you could maybe gwr 300.00-400.00 for the drums....Mikey

I have to ask why did you re-move the wrap? If you did not do that the set is a 400.00+ set..Pearl did not make these sets in the 50's..Your set #1 is made in the mid 60's 1967-1969.What is that black looking rubber near the lug's its another mod to the drum....Mikey

Thanks Mikey. I paid $100 for each set. I removed the Gold Oyster Pearl wrap from the first set because it was badly damaged AND painted black. I don't know what it is about the early Pearl Presidents but both sets have been rendered in black paint/contact paper. Thanks again for your insight, I was thinking about $400 once all the damage is repaired and the shell integrity is restored. The black plastic around the lugs on set #1 are some lug gaskets I had laying around, this is a temporary assembly of the parts just to see what they sound like and I didn't want to mark the phenolic surface. No worries, that phenolic is way harder than wood, and lighter. They will be removed before final assembly.
