Pearl Wood-Fiberglass Set, what's it worth? Last viewed: 10 hours ago

Hey VDF,

I am hoping for some expertise on how much this set is worth. I have done some research and it seems like there is a ton of variables that factor into the price, so I thought I would just take some high-quality pics and make a thread.

Here is the picture album:

I look forward to any feedback.

Thanks,

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

I'd say that kit would fetch at least fifty bucks with the hardware and cymbals.

You may want to move the post to the correct thread though. Try the 'NON USA' one.

Hi,Welcome..to this great forum..On your set i see a few thing wrong with it the two small toms are newer addons toms that are not F/G shells..The tom mount has been replaced with a new one-{that would say extra holes have been added to the bass and two toms}-I see sets like this on C/L listed for 200.00-400.00...Mikey

Welcome to the forum!

First of all, let me say I love these drums!

Your set looks good. Based upon the pictures in your album, you've got a set that is made up of pieces from different eras. The main part of the set appears to be a late 70s Wood-fiberglass set, based upon the hardware and badges. The extra toms, based upon the badges, are early 80s, and I can't tell from the pics if they're fiberglass or maple. By this time frame Pearl had discontinued its wood-fiberglass line.

As for the stands, the hihat is out of the 70s, but that BD pedal is late 80s or possibly even early 90s.

Now, as for value, well that depends a lot upon what someone is looking for and what they're willing to pay. I've attached a couple of photos of 70s Pearl Wood-fiberglass sets I've sold over the last 2 weeks. The one on the left sold on eBay through a Buy-it-Now for $479.99 (price included shipping) just about 4 hours after I posted it. It was pretty much "original" with only minor modifications on my part. I had listed it 2 or 3 times before at a higher price, and it set in a local music store on consignment at a higher price, but obviously I had to drop my price to move the set.

The second one is basically the same, only a re-wrap. The original wrap was shot, and what I re-wrapped it with was not an "original" type of wrap which no doubt devalued it. It brought $305 with only 2 bids ($299.99 starting bid, price included shipping).

I made good money on both sets, as I got them both pretty cheap -- which of course is what I look for when I'm buying. I guess I'm one of those nasty "low-ballers." :)

BTW -- What are the sizes of yours drums? The sets I sold were standard 14x22/15x16/9x13/8x12. The 14x24s and 16x18s always seem to bring more...

And, as I'm ready to post I see Mikey has beat me to the punch on the toms...

Thanks I'm definitely glad I joined.

I just measured everything and it seems to be a standard set (8x8, 8x10, 8x12, 9x13, 15x16, 14x22).

The smaller concert toms are in-fact Maple shells and not the W-F like the rest.

I had a collector come check them out and told me he was looking for a set that had the matching small toms. He later offered me $375, I guess they must of grew on him during the ride home. From what you guys have stated this is a fairly good price to sell at?

I had a Pearl wood fiberglass kit 24-13-14-16-18 (white fiberglass interiors) in really good condition including cases. I bought it new in the mid 70's. Silver satin finish with brand new G2 clear batter and G1 clear reso heads. I had replaced the original hex mount hardware for the new (at the time) vari-set hardware as I kept breaking the tom mount on the 14". After the third replacement mount I was done with it! I sold them to a local gentleman who really wanted a W-F/G kit in those sizes. While he would have paid more. I sold them for $450. I felt that was fair as, while this was Pearl's flagship kit at the time, they just were not that great.

I did not realize as a teenager back in the day, but the shells were most likely Luan and the bearing edges were some sort of a half hearted attempt at a round over. When I put the new heads on them to sell them I was really excited about tuning them up and hearing them again after so many years in storage. I was disappointed to find that they were really difficult to tune and required quite a bit of tension just to get the ripples out of the heads. The resulting sound was really pretty choked. They were always played double headed and were always stored with heads on them so the drums were in round and the bearing edges undamaged. I will say that made them much easier for me to sell the

emotionally.

They may not have sounded great but at least they were heavy! Oh and quite loud. From some of the responses I have seen here, others have had better experiences with w-f/g drums. Your mileage may vary.
