Pearl Wood/fibreglass Drum set information needed Last viewed: 24 minutes ago

Loading...

hi, Im really hoping someone can help me. Im not a drummer, or a musician of any kind. Many years ago I bought a secondhand drum set for a teen daughter to learn to play. after being stored in a shed for some time its a little worse for wear but I think salvageable. I have no clue about this set, other than its a Pearl Wood / fibreglass series set. Im hoping someone can help me to gain some information. This may sound stupid but I dont even know if the colour would be described as yellow or gold, to me its gold. Any information would be helpful. Its a 5 pce set with Remo heads and the snare is silver in colour. Thanks for your time

Hi, Your set was made by Pearl from 1973-78.The shells are 9 ply wood with a Fiberglass netting added to the inside of the shell. The color is called "Gold Silk"..The set looks like it just needs a little cleaning up.Do you have all the parts for the set?.Mikey

Those are actually pretty good drums, in fact ,I have a Pearl W/Fg myself :)

They have a very nice warm sound a they are quite loud.

As for value, they normally sell (In my opinion) far below thier real value.

-There is a Pearl Wood/Fiberglass kit for sale here in sweden right now, it is exactly like yours, 5 piece Gold. Complete with stands and cymbals. The seller is asking 410$.

You should know that prices in Sweden normally are a lot higher than in the states.

The link I was referring to is now dead. -Drums sold.

I did however copy the picture from this ad, and post it here for reference.

Mikey!

I know that the price for these drums here in Sweden is quite a bargain. However, a 10 hour drive, one way, on snowy icy roads, prevents me from acquiring these. Hmm..plus the fact that my wife thinks that I have far too many drums already ;)

Hey, I get excited when a thread comes up on these!

Mikey & Fortissimo have pretty much summed it up... the Pearl Wood-fiberglass line of the 70s are very good drums. I know, most on here have heard this before, but I got my set (that I still own, still play, and still is in near "mint" condition) new in 1978, I wouldn't trade or sell it for anything!

Like Mikey said, your set looks like it just needs a good cleaning. Do you have more pics? It's definately pre-1978, based upon the hex-style tom mounting hardware (Pearl went to the 7/8" "Vari-set" hardware in their 1978 US market catalog).

From your picture, your set configuration is probably and "FW5." See this link: http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/pearl_drumsets/1975_pearl_drumsets6.jpg for more information. I'm guessing you have the standard Pearl metal snare (pictured in the link), but IF you would happen to have the Jupiter snare (Pearl's version of Ludwig's "super-sensitive") you've got a great snare drum (see this link: http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/pearl_snaredrums/1973_pearl_snaredrums.jpg)!

The only question I have is that your internal tone control on the tom pictured MAY NOT be original, as it's got a black felt instead of white which is what pearl usually used. But, unlike vintage American drums, that don't make anywhere near as much differance.

I just sold two of these sets before Christmas. One for $400 (a rewrap), the other for $480 (original). Just shell-packs; no stands, no snare drums. Attached photos of those two sets below.

Sorry for the "book," but I love these drums!!

Thanks for all the information. I dont have other photos but I will take some in the next few days. There is one drum which has rust damage. Btw, I am in Australia. My husband recently replaced the part which a response said wasnt original, as the original one was broken. The drum set is complete with stands and CX-300 Cymbals etc, I dont know if these are original to the set but with the exception to the part I just mentioned, its as I bought it in the late 90's.

Thanks everyone for your replies, Im a lot closer to knowing what this set is.

Great drums. Rock solid. Built like a tank! I used to have a beautiful chrome set, that I miss a lot!

Cadbury,

I have no clue what the "Down Under" market for vintage drums is, but over here in the USA I see no reason to have to take less than what I sold my two sets for (see above).

Good luck if you decide to sell them; Lucky you if you decide to keep!
