Piccolo snare drum recommendation Last viewed: 32 minutes ago

Hello all,

I'm in need of a piccolo snare drum. I'd like a wood or brass shell 14" drum. I need to get the drum quick for a gig and would like to spend under $200us. Anyone have recommendations? Comments about the Percussion plus 14 x 31/2 brass shell would be appreciated. Also I see used Pearl floating shell drums for that price. Always thankful for the knowledgable comments.

JB.

I have a Pearl free floating piccolo snare and love it. It sounds really good wide open or with a muffler ring on it to dampen it.

1971 Ludwig Rock Duo set in Blue Oyster Pearl
early Mapex dual bass drum Saturn kit
1964 Leedy Ray  Mosca kit in Blue Sparkle
1959 Slingerland Super Gene Krupa snare in WMP
1968 Slingerland Hollywood Ace Snare Drum
1969 and 1977 Ludwig 400 Supraphonic snares
1965 Acrolite snare
Ludwig Coliseum snare
'68 Rogers Dynasonic snare
Pearl free floating piccolo snare
13" Mapex piccolo snare
6.5" deep Mapex steel snare
Mapex 6.5" Brass snare
I know there's more snares than that.
UFIP cymbals / Avedis Zildjians
Ghost pedals or Tama King Beats

In keeping with the vintage vibe I can truly recommend an old Ludwig Downbeat snare. Ok they are 13" but they are really good.

60's Ludwig Downbeat Silver Spark
70's Ludwig Super Classic White Marine
60's Gretsch RB Champaigne Spark

As well as agreeing with Pearl or Ludwig Downbeat's, others I have enjoyed are the hammered bronze 13x3 Ludwigs (not cheap but beautiful sounding IMHO), Dixon brass piccolos (can be bought cheap, sound like a good brass snare, buy a spare strainer or swap it out).

1964 Ludwig Champagne Super Classic
1970 Ludwig Blue Oyster Super Classic
1977 Rogers Big R Londoner 5 ebony
1972/1978 Rogers Powertone/Big R mix ebony
60's Ludwig Supersensitive
Pearl B4514 COB snare ( the SC snare)
Pearl Firecracker
PJL WMP maple snare
Odds & Sods

Sabians, Paistes, Zildjians, Zyns, UFIPs, MIJs etc

I have a Ludwig Carl Palmer Venus model that is stunning. Will cost you a few more bucks though. I love it.

Yes Sir Yep, the Pearl Free-Floater is becoming the standard for "new" piccolo snares. Mine's a 14x3.5, 6-ply birch with a beautiful glossy red stain. I find it more mellow than the "ringy" metal shell versions, and the 10-rod tuning and double-ended snare tensioning can be dialed in very precisely and consistently, more so than most vintage piccolos (gasp! sacrilegious!). I use mine only for brushwork/jazz gigs paired with a 20" Ludwig Transition-badge bass + high hat and 1 sizzle ride (no toms), and it cuts through nicely without being mic'd in all the fancy restaurants and reception halls in which I've used it.

I don't know what they go for new (mine was a gift from the wifey), but I'm sure you can pick up a nice used one for around $100-150.

I have a 10 lug steel snare 31/2 x 14 no name I'm asking 125 needs some parts but killer drum

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Okay. After I expounded on the superiority of the expensive Pearl free-floaters, I thought I'd go online to see what's available out there for piccolos under $100, and I found these snares for about $40 each...

What are Griffins? I'm assuming MIC, but nice wood shell snares for $40 new (with free shipping!) on eBay? Looks like a nice option for student/entry-level. Anyone have personal knowledge of these?
