Picked up a Ludwig Universal NOB- questions Last viewed: 8 minutes ago

Loading...

I picked this up tonight. 6 lugger nickel over brass with my favorite strainer. It needs a good bit of clean-up, but looks to be a nice snare under a layer of grime.

Qs: I'm hoping to use this for some lighter work with my set. Is that a good idea with a 6 lugger? I'd like some thoughts on heads and wires.

Also, the drum has a mixed lot of hoop clips, broken brass as well as rusted steel and maybe one good brass clip. drumfactorydirect.com sells nickel over brass hoop hooks. I have purchased from them before, but has anyone bought these hoop hooks? Do they fit the older hoops?

Thanks in advance.

Unless I'm mistaken I believe that I picked up a few hooks from them for this 10 lugger of mine and they fit just fine.

Very nice drum. The nickel plated hooks are around $2 each. Vintage would likely be more (if I could find them). Another Q: how would you date this drum with no badge and the P883?

Thanks

I've got the exact same drum. For some reason I have the impression that mine is early 1930's but I've had it so long I can't remember how I determined that. LOL! It's a nice drum, fun to play.

And the vintage ones will break! The best solution is finding a 6 hole triple flange hoop. I'm using a Rogers NOB one my 6 lug Pioneer, and it sounds great!

Now that's a good idea - I may just do that so I can play the drum this week.

thx

Now about those heads and wires- give me some ideas...

Kenny set mine up with a Remo Ambo CS top, left my generic wires on. Tuned lower then I'd been. Final quote was that's a f...ng great drum. Been playing it the same ever since. Figure if it's good enough for him, who am I to change it. Here's a before pic...

The "Universal is made w/ thin brass , & cannot be tightened very much before the shell deforms. Therefore they tend to have a tubby, unfocused voice. Watch the shell closely, even as you approach normal, modest tension. (This is made even worse w/ modern heads, because mylar needs to have a certain tension in order to achieve a good sound). I have picked up many Universals over the years, because they are beautiful, & a very inexpensive piece of history, but they have never been a satisfactory metal snare. The Universal started using this strainer c.1929, & stayed in the L&L line until c. 49-50.

I picked up one of these snare drums myself at an antique mall for $130.Don't know much about it so I don't know if I overpaid or got a good deal on it for the price I paid
