Picked up an old set of Ludwigs. What do I have? Last viewed: 45 minutes ago

From verminator

I'm going to guess 75-76 because of the pointy badges and re-enforcement rings. Welcome to the world of collecting. It can be addictive.

That's what is confusing me. The more I read the more confused I get. The serial number is 7 digits starting with 16 which supposedly makes it after 76. It looks to be a 3 ply with rerings, it looks exactly like the cortex wrapped kit inthe 76 catalog, and as someone else pointed out the stands are 76 as well.

All serial numbers are 1675859.

Forgive my ignorance. What would I be looking for if I remove a lug?

If they have re-rings (appears that they do) then they are 3 ply. The 6 ply or 4 ply drums did not have re-rings.

Welcome Chunky. Your pic shows 3 ply. But as Mike says, if the shells have reinforcement rings then they will be 3 ply. I don't think we've seen a 4 or 6 ply shell with factory re-rings appear...yet.

Don't get too hung up on what you read about serial numbers if you are getting your information from the web. All of the guides which I know about on the web are a little out of date. That includes the ones associated with this illustrious site, and the info Ludwig has as well.

The latest published research I know of is Serial Number Based Dating Guides for Vintage Ludwig Drums by Richard E Gier, published by Rebeats in 2013. In that book your serial of 1675859 would be slightly past the previous highest serial number for a 3 ply shell (that was 1635000ish and 1977ish). But the story with Ludwig is "expect the unexpected". New info is coming in all the time. And year estimates based on serial numbers are subject to at least a ±2 on the end, although we don't write that that way. But the uncertainty is still there.

That drumset totally sums up 1976!

Butcher block, natural interiors, standard five piece configuration.

Great score!

Reminds me of the rooftop kit.
