I don't believe those are MMX lugs. Even the badge is suspect. I would have to see them with a bit more detail, but they look 'off' to me. They have an Export feel to them.

Thanks for the reply, I have asked the seller to provide more info and serial nos etc. It's an ebay item which I havent paid for yet. I was meant to be collecting this weekend but I am doubting they are genuine MMX after looking around online.

Good luck on that one. I have some doubts, but then again...I'm not a Pearl expert. Fact is, I'm not much of an expert of anything. I can make my cat purr, but not necessarily on cue. So, while it does infer a talent, it could not be construed as expertness. Keep us up on what you find out. More detailed pics would help.

The MMX series were 4 ply shells with Reinforcement rings. If the drums have re-rings they'll be an MMX series, but I have my doubts based on those pictures. If they do not have the re-rings they will be 6 ply shells which is what Pearl still uses on their Master series kits today.

Those are poor pictures they provided to you. Some of the drums look like they had the long high tension lugs. However, The MLX, BLX and Custom Z / CZX lines all used similar looking 1 piece high tension long lugs. The MLX, BLX and Custom Z lines were all pro level kits in their day.

Edit:

I see that the bass has 10 lugs per side, so that tells me it is NOT an export. I'm guessing MLX (maple) or BLX (birch).

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay?

Not totally accurate. Pearl had several 4 ply w/rering lines. My African Mahogany kit has 4 ply with rerings, not to mention most of the other 4 ply Masters and Pure Maples, etc.

I, too feel that it is not an Export. Just has that vibe to it. Either an older Pearl series, an odd Export, or something else entirely. We should await pics on this one. He's freekin' out as it is.

I agree with you, Pearl did haveseveral variations and names of 4 ply kits with the re-rings over the years, including now. I was assuming that he had gotten the MMX series name from the owner. But, looking at the pictures, I don't know I would take the owners word for much, as he may have been told they were that.

Pics of the badges, lugs and interiors will tell the tale.

Certainly looks as though they are sitting pretty...in a pawn shop.

I love the reack, too, has that vintage "industrial" look to it...

Wow guys thanks for all the feedback - great stuff I only paid £300 GBP which is a steal really I just wanna know what I am buying for sure? The guy says this:

"Hi mate finish is piano black, 236453 is custom serial circa 94 , MMX burgundy on gold badge pre serial original fatory series full tom lug i know pearl like the back of my hand and would put them at 87-88 it was before they started lining them with **** birch mahog mix. they stopped using pure maple on MMX in 99 when they actualy started calling the range MMX, and dropped the standard of the wood, look for burgundy on gold badge no MMX name but a light shell with darker laquer or same year costoms, and maple session elite all match perfect".

one of the shells is quoted as a maple custom and 3 are mmx as above
