+1..That looks like an 8 lug Jazz Festival,not a 6 lug Pioneer.In that case.with a pre- serial number badge,it's worth upwards of 400-450,in that condition.Steve B

One more thing I still am not sure of, what is the particular name of the kit? Just curious. Thanks.

It was likely a 13/16/22 configuration (caled a Super Classic) with the 12 tom and second rail mount added later. Ludwig had a 12/13/16/22 configuration that was called the Hollywood. The mounting system would likely not have been two rails but instead a center post holding both toms. Your 13 tom is mounted backwards, as it probbaly started out on the left side with the badge toward the audience. When the 12 tom was added, the 13 was moved to the right and now its badge addresses the player and tone control lever faces the audience.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72

the supra would have most likely been the drum that came with the kit. there is a big difference in sound between the 10 lug metal supra and the 6 lug wooden pioneer. that's a nice kit you have there. certainly keep those new beats. you could sell the pioneer and get some real good quality cymbals. 60's avedis zildjians are really low on price right now. you could get a crash and a ride for under 200 most likely.mike

Thank you for this info. I didn't realize the differences between the 6 and 10 lugs. It certainly is helpful in making the right decisions.

It doesn't really line up with any particular catalog kit due to the dual rail mounts. The original five piece set was called the "Hollywood" but had a different center post tom mount and also came with two 8x12 toms over the bass drum rather than a 12 & a 13 Like you have there.

The catalog names really didn't matter as all the drums were made exactly the same and the catalog names merely referred to various suggested configurations of those drums. In other words an 8x12 tom tom from a Downbeat set was exactly the same as an 8x12 from a Hollywood set...there weren't "downbeat" or "Hollywood" drum lines.

I think Rick is probably right as far as how this set came to its current configuration. The 12 was an add on to the factory set.

Actually, I had another picture of it I took but didn't post and it is 6 lugs. The wrap does seem pretty bright and I didn't think it looked yellow at all when I was looking it over. I am sort of leaning towards keeping the Pioneer with the set because it is no flaking like the Supraphonic. For us novices is there a very noticeable difference in sound? Or in other words, would it be crazy to keep the Pioneer over the Supraphonic? One more thing I still am not sure of, what is the particular name of the kit? Just curious. Thanks.

With the BD, FT, and 13" tom tom, and the mount with the telephone dial holder, you have a mid sixties Super Classic. It`s been drilled for a different rail mount and smaller tom tom.

It`s no longer collectors grade but all the hardware is correct and collectors grade. The tilter arm for the cymbal is prolly the most sought after part of the Super classic nowadays. Yours is there.

That white Pioneer is awesome as, shine that thing up. It`s wrap is also sixties.

What are the cymbals ?

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

The cymbals are Apollo cymbals. Except the high hats, they are Zildjian New Beat hi-hats. Well, I am grateful to learn that it's a good set. It didn't cost us much, so I figured it probably was just an basic intro kit. But just from what I have learned even since posting this thread this afternoon, it appears to be a much better "find" than I was aware of. Personally, I play a some guitar and piano, but I have found myself drawn to these drums lately when no one is around, so who knows...
