Please help to ID (& value?) a 1965 Ludwig Snare Last viewed: 48 minutes ago

Hi,

I'm new and I'm helping an older friend find info on his Ludwig snare drum.

I went looking for info and 2 pages helped me to narrow things down a bit:

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_badges.html

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/serial_numbers.html

(Here's where I kinda geeked out a bit trying to date it a bit better):

Based on the information on these 2 pages, and if you look at the total number of drums made between April of 1964 and April of 1965 (which was 111,076), and you divide by 12 months, that gives you an average of 9256 drums per month. If you take the serial number of this drum and subtract from the April 1964 starting point, this would be the 105,433rd drum made in that period. Taking that number and dividing by the average number of drums per month, would tell you (if the averages held) that this was probably made about 11.39 months into that cycle, giving this drum an approximate manufacture date of March 1965, maybe give or take a few weeks.

This has 10 lugs (I guess you count the bolt going from the top to bottom of the drum through the big metal piece in the middle as one lug?) and it measures about 14" by 5.8" (would that be considered a 5" or 6"?)

In reading a lot of posts here, I'm now not sure if this is a Supraphonic, Acrolite, etc?

Is this a Chrome on Brass do you think?

Any other information would really be great, too.

Thanks a bunch,

Steve

You have a 14x5 Ludwig Supraphonic. The serial numbers are kind of just a loose guide – Ludwig was not very consistent about keeping a strict order or keeping track of them.

That one seems to be in great condition! Unfortunately, they're not very rare, so even in great shape the value is around 250-350 bucks depending on the buyer. Does the owner have anything that goes with it? If the original case is in the same condition as the snare, that might get you into the 400s.

Steve, welcome to VDF !

What you have is a supraphonic. Looks to be in great shape. I have one from '65 that I paid $185 in 2011. Hope this helps.

Could have the date stamp on the interior. COB hoops could possibly give an indication to early or late in the year as well, but not always correct either. Great sounding snare and looks to be in very good condition. If zero pitting, I would say the estimate above is correct.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the replies so soon. He also has a stand (which is in a couple of those pics above), a pair of sticks, a practice pad and a CB700 soft shell zipper case.

Would that have a P83 Strainer with metal snares on the bottom?

I like that page that talks about the brass and Ludalloy, jazzbo - thanks.

This drum appears to be in excellent shape with the original muffler and snares. I would think $250-300 is a fair price.

your date assessment is pretty close. certainly a spring '65 drum in most cases. nice drum! ebay completed sales on keystone badge models in the same condition as this one should give some good indication of its value.

Thank you again, all, for all the information and insights. I just had John come over so I could look for an inner date stamp (none, BTW) and snap a few more pics.

Cheers!
