Popularity of Other Manufacturer's Equivalent to the Ludwig Club Date Last viewed: 37 minutes ago

The Ludwig Club Date outfits are really popular, but what about the other manufacturer's equivalents? The Gretsch Renown, the Rogers Comet/Delta and the Slingerland Stage Band outfits. These are the kits with center mounted separate tension lugs.

Club Date demand and values seem to be up there, but what about the other makers? I don't see many for sale and the going prices are usually on the low side.

For one thing, they are a little lighter than the double lug drums. Plus, you would think the shells would resonate a little more than the double lug drums.

Might have a chance to get a Rogers Comet (12x8 tom, 20x14 bass and Luxor snare) with an added Holiday 16x16 floor tom. All of the wrap matches, so the floor tom was either purchased at the same time or very shortly after. All Cleveland tags too. Floor tom has a S/N - 55xxx and the snare has a S/N - 8xxx. Needs some parts (lug/collets/tom arm/badge) and a really good cleaning, but no extra holes and the wrap on all of the drums is tight and unscratched/uncracked.

Thanks for the offer. I haven't purchased the kit. The price is pretty good, but I already have too many kits. But I don't have a Rogers. :)

I would need to put about $170 in parts, around $130 in heads and about 10 - 12 hours to clean it up. Recent ebay prices for Tower style drum kits have been only $400 to $600. Nowhere near the prices of Holiday style drum kits, even though the shells are the same.

I think that, thanks to Ringo, Ludwig sold a lot more of these type of sets to budget conscious Ringo wannabes than the other companies. There just seem to be more of the Ludwigs out there. Perhaps there were more people wanting to have Ludwig drums to the degree that they would take whatever they could afford whereas someone who had decided they wanted a Gretsch, Slingerland, or Rogers set was more inclined to get the more expensive sets.

You do see some Gretsch "Playboys" and Slingy Stage Bands now and then but not nearly to the degree of the Ludwigs.

Club dates sound great though, same shells as all the rest of Ludwig's line and less mass on the shells. I know I like the sound of mine.

Yep, that Ringo character. :) When it came to Ludwigs, people probably just wanted a kit in the same color and didn't care too much about the hardware configuration. Price and availability were factors too.

Well I bought the kit. :o It's Silver Glass Glitter with very little fade. You can tell by the missing lug on the tom.

Some of the hardware is not in as good of condition as I would have liked, but I'll see how it cleans up. There is some very small brown rust specks on the Swivomatic hardware. Was this common? What's the best way to clean?

Someone painted the insides of the mounted tom, floor tom and bass drum with the same shade of "Rogers" gray, only in semi-gloss. Not sure why, but it looks like it was done awhile ago. Probably some young kid in the 80's. ;)

Got a couple other projects to finish and then it's time for a complete overhaul for this kit.

When the time comes, I'll start a WTB thread for the necessary parts.

Since I now have two Luxor snares, I'm selling my Black Diamond Pearl Luxor in the For Sale section.

Here are some quick pictures of the new kit.

A good guess as to why someone repainted the insides of the shells, is rusty hardware.

I have seen many Rogers drums that look great on the outside, but the internal hardware has a white powdery light corrosion. Mainly on bass drums and floor toms.

The original hardware could be cleaned up , or perhaps some new hardware is installed, and painted over gray to look like the original.
