Possible WFL Green Sparkle Rewrap - Please Help! Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hello everyone,

I recently received this green sparkle WFL floor tom in the mail. I've been looking for one of these for over a year now, and so I paid a "premium" price since I thought it was a genuine drum.

Well, upon further inspection now that I've taken the drum apart; it appears to be a rewrap! I contacted the seller, and he still thinks it's not. He definitely isn't trying to rip me off or anything - if it IS a rewrap he doesn't know.

When the seller got the drum, it came with the badge removed. I guess the previous owner was going to rewrap the drum, but ended up not. So, the badge being off this drum at one point is definitely a red flag.

I've attached some photos which might help identify whether or not this wrap is original or not.

Here's the suspicious parts:

- The badge was removed at some point

- The seam is pulling apart and is sloppy. You can see a slice mark near one of the lugs. The seam on all of my other WFL drums is flat, with one end of the wrap over the other.

- The lug holes in the wrap are sloppy

- There's a weird part of the wrap by the edge that looks like someone cut it, and peeled half of it off. The wrap by the edges looks generally suspicious - there's some white residue on the edges right where the wrap ends.

- The wrap is not tucked into the scarf joint of the shell.

- The "sparkles" in this wrap are much smaller than that of my 1957 WFL marching snare.

Is this a rewrap, or just bad WFL quality control? I'm thinking rewrap, but I need confirmation! Or maybe I'm wrong... I hope so.

It's faded enough and rough enough to look like an older wrap. But the no wrap in the scarf joint would seal the deal for me as not being original wrap.

True - if it's a rewrap, it was definitely done a long time ago.

Here's a pic comparing this drum to my 1957 WFL marching snare.

It might be hard to tell in the photo, but the "sparkles" in the floor tom are much smaller and finer than the snare, which has the classic "glass glitter" type finish. Did WFL ever use this fine-sparkle type finish?

I'm going to agree with "lucky" and say original as well.. From what i see, and of course i could be wrong, the faded part compared to the wrap under the lugs seems consistent with typical wrap fading..The other is the possibility that the wrap may have shrunk, causing that "zebra/tiger stripe crackling..That would also explain the uneven or seemingly sloppy screw holes..

The wrap looks original to me..

I definitely see what you mean with the age of the wrap. However, this rewrap could have easily been done sometime in the 70s or so! I have a 70s drum that has very similar fade/age to it.

The strange cut and residue around the edges are what really convinced me that this is a rewrap. I peeled a bit of the wrap off where it was cut, and it was held on by tape. That combined with it not being in the scarf joint is a bit too suspicious...

It is supposedly original, yes. It's the 48-52 WFL badge. This shell is definitely a WFL, but I'm thinking the wrap is not!

There's just a slight possibility that this wrap is not original, but an experiment like my own here with trying to make silver glitter wrap - if you use the wrong adhesive to attach the wrap to the shell, it can react with the adhesive used to stick the glitter to the wrap, accelerating the type of "aging" seen here. The fact that the reaction did not occur under lugs etc could be from the pressure it was under in those areas. The biggest reason I say this is the smaller glitter - I made the same mistake myself, should have ordered a larger grit.

I mean....probably not, but maybe. :)

The pic you show of the seam, has the wrap drilled from the inside, the Factory drills from the outside. The strange thing is, I don`t see wrap inside the scarf joint either.

Can you follow that layer to where the factory would tuck it under the scarf joint, that wrap should still be in there, take a pic. of that.
