Good question. I have a '67 Jazz Fest that I played for about 7 hours last night with my son and it sounded really great. The snare head was tuned very tight, the batter head (a coated CS) was tuned a little above medium and it had a fantastic "woody" tone. It sounded more like a 6.5" snare. Quite enjoyable and, you are quite right, it is oddly light.
