10 x 27 birdseye maple bass drum, possibly by F.E. Dodge around 1890. original calfskin head. Has original tuning key and cool flip out legs. Was apparently repaired/reworked by Ralph Eames in 1986. Anybody have any info about this drum. The seller said it was meant to only have one head and that the player would carry his traps inside...I am not too sure that's true. Looks like it was fully capable of having another head. What do you think?

The drum is missing the other head.Are you sure that the head size is 27" not 27 1/2" like most drums from this time....Mikey

Anything is possible, but I doubt this was originally a single headed drum. (designed to carry traps around ? ? ). This would make a very poor carrier. Traps are heavy, they have sharp edges, & even in a bag or case , they would chew up the finish, tear the head, or fall out the side. As far as the size goes, almost anything is possible. I have many basses from the teens & 20's that are every imaginable odd fractional size. (Just count yourself lucky to have a good calf head).
