I am working in Evanston, Wyoming, population 1,000,000 cows and about 2,500 people if I had to guess.....
There is a rodeo or something here, and Clay Walker was playing the show last night. His band was staying in our hotel, I didn't know this at the time, and just happened to see a guy with a big "Vic Firth" backpack walk past me at the breakfast room. Of course, I ask him what was in the bag and we chatted for a second. His name was Greg Smith, a very nice, un-assuming guy, I might add. We were off yesterday, so we literally played about 14 hours of poker in that breakfast room, and here comes the band back in to the hotel late at night. He looked pretty smoked from the session, and I am nobody's mook, so I just said hi and he seemed receptive to conversation, so we chatted a bit. When vintage drums came up, I only needed three seconds to show my old man's kit to him, which he seemed to dig! Not many do in my circle.......... So, we chatted a bit more and he said he played Pearl's for the show, had an 80's Gretsch kit also, and would love to have a blue sparkle vintage Rogers kit. I told him about the site here, and asked him to join up and contribute to the melee....lol.
Anyways, I realize a lot of you guys either are, or have been that guy I was talking to, whether admitted or enjoying the anonymity of a screen name.......For me, I don't get the chance to chat with a pro drummer, face to face, really ever, so it was pretty cool for me.
