Problems with tom mount Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

Loading...

Just scored a Ludwig melodic tom from ebay and it arrived today.

Needless to say, was totally excited to add and play it to my kit. Unfortunately, the mounting on the tom does not seem to like any of my L arms for mounting. I haven't a clue why. I checked to see if something was stuck in there and it's not obscured.

Did the late 70s melodic toms have different mounting arm sizes? I can't even fit it on an L arm from the late 80s/early 90s.

can you post a pic of it? make sure the nut is loose so that the interior part can move freely and then torque back down.

Needs a 9.5mm (3/8ths inch) "L" rod. Also make sure you have two washers under the nut on the bracket. Look it over closely as sometimes they get overtightened to the point where the metal casting under the nut collapses in enough to keep the eyebolt from getting tight (although another extra washer might help).

Most 70's Concert toms came with a clip style mount. The one you have is actually preferable to most folks. If worse come to worst you can get a new bracket that will bolt right on and should solve any problems while looking the same on the outside.

Damn, looks like I'm gonna have to replace the bracket then.

Maybe all you need to replace is the internal eye/bolt. Find a Ludwig eye/bolt that fits your existing L-arm and install it.

Too many great drums to list here!

I thought about that but the 12.8 mm L arm doesn't even fit in the hole at all.

Sounds like you have either 10.5mm or 12.7mm tom arms, when the old Ludwig mounts took 9.5mm arms only. No mystery: you have modern L-arms and the Ludwig is not modern.

Gibraltar makes replacement phenolic balls with 9.5mm arms on them that fit in most ball joint receivers. Available at fine drum shops across the land.
