Question about a '57 Ludwig WMP Symphonic Snare Last viewed: 12 minutes ago

Hey Folks,

Newbie here, but when I found this forum I had to grab some pictures of my snare and see what the story was on this one. My dad got this snare and it is apparently a '57. That's about as much as I knew for the longest time. My dad played it from childhood and while he toured with a country/southern rock group called "The Pilgrims". When I started playing drums his snare and red sparkle Ludwig rockers were passed to me and I have been playing with this snare ever since. Pretty much everyone that plays it claims its the smoothest and deepest snare they've every played, and I would probably agree. From the 1957 catalog it seems to match the symphonic and it is in great playing shape, though the chrome doesn't shine as much. Does anyone know if this is a 1957 symphonic snare? Any ideas of how and if I should restore it (polish the chrome)? Does anyone have any idea of how much it is currently worth? Any details would be appreciated. One day I would like to have it looking sharp and back in my dad's set. Thanks for all the help. Picture's are attached as best I know how.

You are correct it is indeed the symphonic model 6 1/2x14" the badge on your drum is called the transition badge, the best way to clean and polish the drum is to remove all the metal parts use simichrome metal polish, it will make all the parts shine brilliantly the white marine pearl wrap to clean and polish it use Novus plastic polish #2 your drum will look almost brand new, you can get the simichrome at any good motorcycle shop, here are some links to both polishes I have mentioned to you. http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/metal-prep-coloring/polishing-tools-accessories/polishing-compounds/1-76-oz-simichrome-sku189001000-5178-11932.aspx?mc_id=12000&ch=csh&gdftrk=gdfV21820_a_7c187_a_7c7313_a_7c189001000_d_189001000_d_11594 http://www.webstaurantstore.com/novus-plastic-polish-kit-plastic-polish-and-scratch-remover-8-oz/448PN7100.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=448PN7100&utm_campaign=PLA&gclid=CLSXgqDOrrcCFU1p7AodIWoAeA

Hi, Part of the reason the chrome isnt that shiney is that it looks to be nickel plated, not chrome. Personally, I like the look of nickel with WMP better than chrome. Great drum.

How can I tell if its nickle? I see what you mean as it looks like some old Martin butterbean tuners. Can I polish the nickle or at least clean it up in any way?

Thanks so much for the input, all of it has been real helpful.

that does appear to be nickel. it will polish up to a nice deep lustre. i normally use cape cod polishing cloths on my nickel hardware.

You really only need the novus #2, your drum sales in the $350.00 + range.

So a small problem has arose. I broke the snare throw bat the other day. Know of any exact replacements out there?

Also is that a P87? The bat broke off as seen in the pic.
