I have 6 Ludwig Pioneer snare drums. 3 are pre-serial number with nickel hardware and hoops. The bottom hoops have the dropped gate. The other 3 have serial numbers. They also have nickel hardware and hoops. The bottom hoops are straight. I've had these drums for 15 to 20 years. Before today I had never put a magnet to the hoops. I did today just for the heck of it. To my surprise the magnet sticks to the preserial number drum hoops and not to the serial number drum hoops. I have always assumed that the preserial number drum hoops would be brass and the others could be either brass or steel. Am I the only one that is this naive?

That does seem odd or at least backwards for sure. I was also surprised when I realized that I have two original 64 Pioneers that both have nickel over steel hoops.
