question about vintage vistalites Last viewed: 4 hours ago

i recently purchased a set of amber vistalite drums. they were wrapped in white drum wrap for who knows how long, so they are in great shape. the sizes are 24" bass drum, 13" tom, 14" tom, 16" floor tom, and a 20" floor tom. my question is how rare is the 20" floor tom and what is its value?

A: Pretty rare.

B: Depends on how clean you can get it.

Any cracks or other structural issues?

I just saw a blue one in good condition go for around 550 on Ebay a few weeks ago. I assume an amber in similar condition would go for at least that much, probably more?

thanks for the info. it is in very good shape. no cracks and only a few small scratches that i saw. probably could be buffed out easily.

If a 20" sold for $550.00 the guy pretty much gave it away. 20's are pretty rare. Last 20's I've seen went for $700-$850

well when i saw the ad on craigslist, i first skipped over it because the drums were white and there wasn't any hardware that went with them but then i saw a glimmer of orange underneath. then i read the comment at the bottom and the guy said "clear orange plastic shells under the white wrapping". dude my hands started shaking. i called the seller and he wasn't in to drums he just needed them sold for $500.00 to cover the cost of the storage unit he bought. i actually told him what they were and that they were worth more money but he said five was the price take it or leave it, so i took it. i'm a huge bonham fan and i really love playing the drums.

I was helping my girl-at-that-time's dad clean out a spare bedroom that had become a crazy junk room and found a stack of amber Vista's (normal 12-13-16-22 set, I think, but ultra-clean). He said "Oh, those? Buddy of mine asked me to hold on to them in 1980-something along with some other junk. Haven't seen him in 20 years. Should probably toss 'em. You want?" I couldn't hose the guy in good conscience. I was working at a drum store at the time and passed his info on to the owner - we had to twist the guy's arm to make him take $900, and he fought us down from $1k. Big pile of nice Ludwig & Rogers hardware and some Giant Beats, too.

Some people would just rather make stuff go away than try and research values and come to any understanding of and stress about the vagaries and minutiae of a niche collector market. A couple bucks and getting stuff out of their life is a win-win for them.

I almost forgot, there was an amber 5 1/2" (or whatever the norm for Vistas was) snare, too.

I think I ended up hand delivering them to a guy in Chicago (from Grand Rapids Michigan) who had good taste and deep pockets and bought a lot from us.

Glad you found a monster dream set for a Bonham guy. I might have the beginning of a beastly Ludwig set coming my way.

I picked up a Silver sparkle Dayton Rogers in VG cond. 8x12,14x14,14x20+ holyday matching snare from a church in Downey,CA once for $50.00. The guy wanted me to take $50.00 for picking up "that lot of useless drums taking up space at the music room" in order to make room for the new set of Tamas they have bought a couple of weeks before. He insisted on giving me $50.00 and I didnt want to take them. Then he said " Well...the director wanted me to give you this $50.00 and since youre not taking them you are pretty much paying me $50.00"...I drove home thinking did I actually paid $50.00 for such an amazing set?...A couple of days later the guy called me to let me know he found a set of Zildjians I could have and the swivomatic stands...There was no money involved for that...should I say that I should consider them part of the deal? I tried to pay for the cymbals and stands too but he didnt want to listen either...Im still speechless...
