Question from an old Noob Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

Hello all,

This is my first post.

After a 40 year layoff, I have decided to get back into playing the drums. My job doesn't allow me to play as much golf as I used to so I was looking for another diversion/challenge that wouldn't require 5 hours out of the house.

So I got the bright idea to re-learn the drums. As a child of the late 60's and early 70's I'd like to find something with that kind of "vibe" (read sparkley). Other than new lower end kits, I have focused on these two.

The first is a Slingerland '70's kit with a mid 60's Rogers Luxor snare. This one is owned by a friend of a friend who works in a music store and has some basic hardware he will include so all I'll meed are cymbals.

The second is an early 60's CROWN kit from Japan...I think by my research here it was made by Star but not sure. This one has been completely disassembled, cleaned and put back together with new heads, I forget what kind but the guy is a drum nut so I imagine they are decent.

I'd love to hear any opinions y'all might have.

Than you in advance!

if it were me i would go with the first choice (Slingerland and Rogers combo). that one has more value to it for one and also the guy is asking less for it then the other set. and beings it is from a friend of a friend i think i would feel more easy about the transaction. just my opinion.

o and btw Welcome to the forum.

I was in the same boat you were. I took a 42 year layoff and got back into drums about three years ago.

And my first set to get back into it were Slingerlands. Just love the sound.

And for there asking price I would jump all over it.

I'd vote the Slingerlands as well.

Welcome back to the fold. :)

Me too, on the Sling set. (Wonder what Rogers snare is included.) The Crown kit is very nice-looking, but the $$, meh.
