Questions about some Club Dates! Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

I just purchased this random set of Club Dates to restore and have some questions.

The kick and snare are both pre-serial number and since the kick is a 22 with single tension I am guessing these 2 drums were purchased together as a Spotlight kit originally with the floor and rack tom added later. However the kick is a natural mahogany finish and the snare has the painted white interior. Did they have some crossover during the pre-serial time where some had the painted interiors and others did not?

Now the bigger question! The 12 inch rack tom has a white interior and a 6 digit serial number in the 500,000 range. That all checks out but the 14 inch floor tom has a serial number of 626476 with a mahogany interior like the pre-serial number Ludwigs. I thought after the white interiors they went to clear maple?

The pre- serial transition time is when the white paint started so yes more than likely born together.

Thanks for the replies. But what about the 14inch floor tom?

It's got a late 60's serial number, 1 inch tone control knob and a clear Mahogany interior not maple. I thought the badge may have been replaced with a later badge but the grommet looks good.

I see quite a few natural maple interiors on early 60's bass drums, especially 22's and even more so with clubdates. The accompanying toms are usually white resacote interiors. Any sign of the floor tom interior being stripped? Even if not, doesn't stand out as a big issue. That should make a great kit. Ive got a black lacquer clubdate and a maple clubdate. So I like 'em either way!

Hey Mike there are no signs of it being stripped but the interior is mahogany not maple. Isn't that a little strange for a Luddy drum from the late 60's?

Yeah I caught that I think. The interiors are bass/maple, ride tom/white and floor to/mahogany right? That was why I asked if any sign of being stripped. You are correct in that the later 60's were usually clear maple interiors. If the were wrapped shells, it would help us some as those maple interior shells of the late 60's did not have the wrap tucked into the shell. But being duco painted, that's not an option for us.

You got it Mike! Those are the correct interiors and why I am so confused. I am also guessing none of these were ever wrapped. The shells look way to clean underneath and I see some very faint signs of what looks to be old blue duco. So my guess is that they were all originally duco that were stripped and painted black. Unfortunately the spotlight kick took a bad hit during delivery and the nut from the tom holder went through the drum. Should be a relatively easy fix and I am thinking I am going to spray these duco again anyway. Just bums me out because it could have been so easily avoided.

That rail may have been added based on the placement of the cymbal holder in the center, which would have been correct for for bass from that period. At least the mount is in the proper spot for a clubdate bass.
