Questions about these very old drums Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Loading...

I acquired these drums from my grandfathers estate and have not learning much about them. These appear to be Chinese in origin with thick heads (maybe pig skin). The paint matches a large Ludwig bass drum but they could have been repainted to match. you gentlemen are the experts, please tell me what you know about them. They look great in my drum cave but I have yet to clean them until I know their value as collectable or just fabulous drum art. And by the way they still sound good. Thanks in advance.

Very neat....... I'm combing my memory banks....... I believe way in the early days of drum contraption sets "Traps" Ludwig actually bought painted chinese toms for the set... That may be their origin and why they look like ludwigs, but that is just a guess.

You are right but not only ludwig but slingerland, leedy ete..These drums are the first "mounted toms" used on sets from about mid 1910s-to the late 20s the smaller ones were used as mounted toms sizes like from 7" to 14" the bigger ones as floor toms sizes like 15" to 17" that sat in a snare drum type of stand.Yes these are made in china cool if you have the hole set Ludwig bass maybe like a 28" or 30" matel snare and these toms made up the set also wood blocks that would be red and black painted that would also mount on the top of the bass drum....Mikey
