Questions about VDF in general Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Are we all here for history, or here to learn how much history is worth?

Im here for the history of what I have, what I want and what I dont know about (yet)

Are we all here because this is a hobby, or is this a business?

Hobby all the way, the few things I have sold I have tried to NOT make money on, but simply break even or in some cases just to help folks out I ship stuff out for free.

I am doing a speech for my Comm 220 course and I want to talk about the Vintage Drummer Culture.

Awesome, please post the finished work for us.

From what I can gather we collectively

-Answer questions about vintage drums of all brands and models.

Yup, I came here after an old ludwig set found me, havent left since.

-Buy and sell parts and whole drums

Yes again.

-dislike ebay, but will occasionally use it to buy and sell

I'd rather go through a forum member then evil bay, but sometimes you have to.

-don't have respect for users (like leecountymusic, ebayer) and if given the opportunity would hit them with a lead pipe.

Not a lead pipe, but a stripped down drum shell they've already sold all its parts off of.

-show off our restorations

Yes! This forum is SUPER supportive and we all love drum ****

But why do we do this, (see above questions)

For Money?

no, if I break even on stuff Im happy, I believe in Kharm and what you put out you get back.

For History?

Hell yes! I have learned more then I could ever imagine from this site.

For Fun?

If you're not having fun here, you have a problem.

What drives us to spend hours on craigslist, ebay and the for sale section?

Up until recently it was the search to find all the bits I've wanted to own or needed to complete something. Now I am content....exept for a single ply snare drum.

Are we here to pay bills?

Not me.

Is it addicting?

Drums and cymbals make a crack addiction seem like a vague craving for something salty.

Is it greed?

For some it is.

Is it our human nature to know and want to know what we don't?

An old adage I live by is " if you didn't learn anything today, you wasted the day.

Would we still enjoy this if instead of a radioking costing hundreds or thousands it was less then $100 bucks?

Yes, I'd have a radio king or 2.

I am here for one reason to talk with and about music and the drums that were the very best ever made , a era of music never to be seen again and to talk with people who lived it and were there like myself... It is not about money, it is about a time when we were living life in a more simple fashion and the creativity that came from that...

Yes.

I've ranted on this before. I was a drum junky years ago, and during that time in my life I played professionally. My life took a turn, I got married and raised a family (all grown & gone now -- except the wife, of course!). Got laid off my job in 2008 and got into this vintage drum thing.

NO regrets! I not only enjoy the history, knowledge, and "fellowship" that VDF brings, but am given a tremendous amount of personal satisfaction when I "refurbish" and bring back to life drums that someone else left for dead!

Not to mention that this has ended up being a very good source of supplemental income, and like an earlier poster have ended up with a registered business name, tax ID numbers (Fed. & State), etc. BUT -- unless this economy tanks even more AND/OR if our beloved "hobby" is just a flash in the pan, I feel I have truly found what I needed to carry me into and through a VERY HAPPY retirement!!

BTW -- altough frustrated with eBay at times, I'm not necessarily an "eBay hater." From where I live, I have very little "market" without it... so it's admittedly a "necessary evil" I guess!

We are here for the inexplicable primal love of feeling a vibrating 5B hickory stick hitting a single ply membrane on a shiny old drum.

Get off! Get your f**in' clothes and get off! Right now! Pull the f**in' bus over! -Buddy Rich

I have recently become a huge fan of 5A's with nylon tips. I got 3 pair on accident one extremely hung over morning and never looked back.
