Questions Regarding 1971 Supra Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

From OldSchool

Well, my drum is definitely from the early 70s (Dec.9, 1971), has the "modified" B/O badge and, upon further inspection with my one functioning eye (sorry about that!), I did discover a "B" stamped on the shell right behind the round dial muffler. I tried to take a pic of the "B" but I can't get a clear one. I can assure you that it's there though. What I'm still not sure of is whether the "non-brass" rims on this drum are the originals. I would think that a Supraphonic with a brass shell would have also come with brass rims. Am I mistaken?

That's great information! It was always assumed that the COB 70's Supras were early 70's, but then some information surfaced that they were only from the late 70's. Your drum proves that they were indeed around in 1971. This makes me suspect they were made throughout the entire decade.

Thanks,

Bill

I'm pretty sure Lubwig stopped using COB rims around 65',and that all drums metal included were COS.

OK...........So I've established the fact that this particular Supraphonic IS a COB model and it appears that the rims on the drum are period correct COS.

I've now got an acquaintance who'd like to purchase the drum. I'm trying to come up with a reasonable fair market price since, if I do sell the drum to him, I'd offer it at a price somewhat lower than the fair market one. The issue I've got is that I honestly haven't seen too many early 70s COB Supras that have been sold recently for a price comparison.

Anyone out there in a position to provide some "words of wisdom" on this subject?

Thanks in advance for your time and your help!

Oldschool. look at it this way a new ludwig brass shelled snare drum is going to cost him at least $500.00 and they are making them everyday, yours is a rare monkey, and it's your drum, but it would at least set him back that much if it where mine. a 1961 model just sold for $1500,00 a few hours ago on feebay bad comparison but still..

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Assuming you will perhaps never see another COB 70s supra again, you might think very carefully about selling it! And be sure the price is one that you won't look back on with regret. This is much more rare than a keystone pre-serial badge 5x14 COB Ludwig super 400, even though it has steel hoops. I think the value should be also determined by comparing the 70s Black Beauty snare drums, because they are probably slightly closer in make-up to the one you have. Your drum should go for a nice price also considering it has everything on it: Tag with date, B stamp, etc.. No question marks per se..

You're certain it's a COB shell? There are quite a few Ludwig B/O badged drums from the 69-71 period without serial numbers. I just sold a 22" WMP bassdrum with a serial#less badge and still have an Acro like that.

Definitely some clipped B/O badged Supras are brass and indeed there will be a B stamped just above the TC knob, I've never seen a Supra with a serial#less badge that is brass. I'm not saying definitively yours is not, but if it is (full B/O badge with no serial# and a B above the TC) I'd love to see a picture or two of it. Especially if it brass and there is no B above the TC.

I forgot: if it is an early COB Supra with full B/O badge without a serial number-or with one) it's a very rare bird and worth some dough..

I've had a couple of the 5x14 COB clipped B/O badged ones . I haven't seen one for a while on ebay but I imagine they go for 300 to 500.

I have seen a 70s 6.5x14 COB as well (it had a serial number 16xxxxx if I recall; I took photos of it) and the B was stamped behind the buttplate!

bonzoleum: I included some pics of the drum in my initial post. If you look near the bottom of Page 1 of this thread you'll also find a description of my particular drum.
