Radio king clamshell strainer replacement Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hi,

i'm new to this forum and to the world of vintage drums in general (my mid 90's sonor force maple doesn't count i guess :D ). I recently acquired a slingerland radio king, which i like very much, but it had the clamshell strainer. I couldn't cope with it on rehearsels so i searched for a solution.

Drilling it would be horrendeous and i'm not to much of an diy guy, so retrofitting stuff would have been difficult. So i was looking for an existing strainer and i've found the solution with my sonor snares. The spacing of the horizontal screws is the same as for the sonor dual glide system. It's a perfect fit!

That's a great replacement. The Clamshell strainer is a love/hate relation ship with many. Very nice that Sonor strainer has the same hole pattern and fits perfectly. I'm sure a few guys here will be interested in seeing this fix! Welcome to VDF.

The value of those Sonor's just sky rocketed!Sumo Dude

Personally, I don't mind the clam shell. It is what it is.

That's a great idea for a "working" snare drum. If the drum becomes a "selling" or a "trading" drum, you can return it to the original hardware. What did you do about that Sonor tail piece (butt) substitution for the clamshell tail piece? Did it also match up to the original holes in the drum? The drum looks very cool.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

The tail piece is in the second picture. Quite bulky for a butt piece, but it fits.

Thank you for educating us. I think that this is a great work-around without destroying the originlity of the drum.
