RadioKing Snare....Evans 360 vs Remo...hard choice! Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hey guys,

Bought a Radio King snare 14*7......amaaaazing drum.

Now I have clear ambassador on the bottom and coated ambassador on the top. The snare sounds AMAZING! But the head on the top is really too hard to get on the drum and is too tight. I really have to force it.

So I thought I try an Evans Level 360 G1. The head fits better on the drum, still a bit thight, but I don't have to force it like the Remo head.

Now with the Evans head I feel the fine character of the snare is gone. I hear more head. Now the drum is a fat loud drum, but I have the feeling I lost the 'integraty' of the sound that I loved so much about this drum.

So the question: too tight Remo (I think it brings some problems to the snare itself) with better sound, or better fitting Evans (better for the drum) with worse sound.......

Maybe the head needs some time to adapt....but with Remo the drums always sound great right out of the box!

Difficult choice. Any suggestions, thoughts? Idea's for different kind of heads?

Thanks :)

It's an instrument. Play it how it sounds best..... with calf skin.

I say go back to the Remos. It's nice those 360's fit so well but I have never liked Evans heads. Just my opinion.

Remo will custom make an over sized head for you, but it will be a possible 6 month wait they make custom heads on a 6 month cycle. You can go the Vintage aquarian head route but I don't care for those heads.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Gotta agree. I have two 7"x14 RK's and both have calf heads on them. The drums sound great. Calf heads is how they came from the factory originally.

Larger investment for calf, but well worth while.

Too many great drums to list here!

Hey guys,

I could get a calf skin. Of course it will cost quite a lot.

I'm just not sure how calf skins hold up. I would also like to use the snare in a rock context, so not only in jazz or fusion context. So it has to stand also some hard bashing.

Also I play in a rather cold cellar and then bring the instruments to a warmer place. Will temperature difference and humidity not effect the skin?

I didn't know Remo made custom orders! Do they ask much higher price for that? If I can stay with Remo, I stay with them. The tone is just the best.

I tried aquarian one time. The customer service is incredible, but the sound is for me just not good. Than I rather play with Evans.
