RB Gretsch Bass Drum Strain with Rail Mounts Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

I was playing my kit the other day, and as I watch the my 12" shake a bit, I noticed the rail mount arm kind of bob with it. I *THNK* there's some mechanism on the mount itself that causes it to have some play, but I began wondering if have the tom shake on a rail mount causes stress to the bass drum shell. If you look at the vide below from around 1:00-1:15, you can see what I mean.

Do you all think the tom movement stresses the bass drum shell?

The mount itself looks secure to the shell. I see more wobble in the spade arm and tom mount than anything. Hard to tell from the short span in the vid. But take a closer look and see what's going on. Could be worn or loose points on the clamp part that holds the spade arm. Or loose in the tom mount where it slides on. Also is this a 2 or 4 bolt consolette? I have a old 2 bolt that came on my Slingerland. I changed to a different setup that moved the tom off the bass. I'm sure over time things can and do get stressed. Many use them all the time without much worry. I'd say in your case it's worth a close look.

That's a very sweet ride cymbal. It didn't look to me like the rail itself was moving when the tom was played, just the upper parts of the mount flexing. Make sure you have as large of fender washers as practical on the inside of the drum under the nuts to spread any potential stresses over as large an area as possible. I don't think I've ever heard of a bass drum shell being damaged by a rail mount simply from normal playing.

If your is the old "phone dial" take a good look. This is mine. The "nub" on the U shaped part fits into the holes on the dial to help secure it in a set spot. The nub on mine is pretty worn and loose fit. It wobbles even when the nut is tight. You can also see the carriage bolt is stretched and bent. It's normal wear and tear from years of use. But that bolt will snap one day. And does not tighten like it should. A good time to look for replacement parts, bolts, nuts etc... if you find yours the same.

That's not me playing, it's another cat from YouTube whose 12" moves like mine, so I'm wondering if that kind of play is normal? I'll try and upload a video later. Basically, if I lightly tap my 12", it rocks back and forth.

Mine does the same thing, and it's been irking me too. I've been considering buying a Maxwell rail to see if it will hold it more steady.

I'm not sure if its bad or on purpose. Part of me thinks that the play is built into the mount and allows it to move slightly, so it doesn't stress the shell. If you look at the photo of the rail attached, I think the bolts on either end of are meant to give the tom some freedom to jiggle?

It looks more like tom is moving on the spade in this video which is normal with this type of mount . We can't really be sure in your case as the video is not your drums . BTW Franco Del Monego is a great player I always dig watching his videos .

Warning ... Avoid member statuscymbal here, vintage_collector on DFO , and americanpatriot10 on eBay. Email me for his name. All are the same shady guy who has burned me and a list of other members on both boards . He is also selling on Facebook too ..
