I will say on my clubdate 12" tom I cut the original wrap right at the scarf joint and then cut into the wrap with a fine sawblade to get it flat. I ended up basically filing the old wrap down inside the joint and butting the new wrap up inside. It was also the same finish.

It can be faked, but like someone said look at the context.
