Real or Fake Vistalite?? Please Help Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Hi, I'm new to forum, Great Place you have here!

I bought my son a 24x16 Bass Drum and 13" tom on Craigslist today because he likes The Vintage Ludwig Blue Vistalite.

I paid $425 and was hoping to buy a matching floor tom to complete set.

Then when we got home we started looking at them closely. The tom didn't have a tone control and we started looking to get one on ebay, also the badge is slightly crinkled. They appear to be in good shape with no cracks just minor scratches. After searching online my son started to suspect they might be fakes. I was surprised to learn that they even made fake vintage Ludwigs..... Please help, if they are fake I want to try returning them as soon as possible.

I attached some pics and serial number on tom is:1184987

Bass Drum:1517523 I not really concerned if they are not a matching set, but if they are real

Thanks

John

Also, if they are real., Where would I find a tone control for the tom. There are a couple holes but not for the wider chrome plate I've seen on some of the other vistalite sets.

they look fine to me. Those badges often get bent up as the sharp corners were always catching on things. That's why they changed them to have rounded corners in around 1979.

What about missing tone control and the holes?? no holes drilled for horizontal plate on tone control? or did they make one without plate?

Hope they are real, but nice to have some experts opinions on this. Maybe got a little paranoid when my son was showing me some posts on fake vistalites on here. Any idea of the date of those serial numbers??

Also confused that tom has 2 vertical holes near top and 2 near bottom for tone control/muffler that is missing. Any ideas where I could find tone control/muffler

it looks like it was drilled for 2 tone controls (top and bottom) which was possibly a special order and the parts you are looking for are fairly easy to find. There are two types to be aware of, one where the mounting screw goes under the knob and the later one where the screw is above the knob. You want the first type. Like the one in this photo

you'll find them on eBay or somebody here might have one or two for sale. Just remember you need the type with the mounting screw below the knob.

Usually they are only fitted with one tone control on the batter side but it's not unusual to find Ludwig drums with two fitted. I suppose you could order them that way.

Thank You, would love to buy one on here

I see the 70's Ludwig's have the screw on bottom and newer ones have screw on top

also it is missing a Bass drum tension rod.

Do I use any 70's era t-rod, or is a special one??

Thanks
