Recent adventures in drum hunting... Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Today, i checked out a student ludwig set that was advertised in our local

newspaper. The lady wanted $50.00. I went over and looked at it. It turned

out to be a Ludwig black/white badge 4 1/2" snare that had a metal shell

with a sprayed black coating with some glitter added. Not really vintage.

A week ago in the local paper does an insert with photos of area people

celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, memorials to their deceased loved ones.

I noticed a picture of a man playing his drum set. Upon further inspection,

the drums were Round Badge Gretsch, 4-pc set. The guy had died 3

years ago in January. A couple of days later, I called his wife to see if she

still had his drums. She said that she did. I asked her the color of the drums

and she told me they were silver. (silver sparkle). She said she wasn't

ready to sell them yet, but might in the future. Turns out the guy was more

of a guitar played than a drummer. (hopefully good for me). I asked her if

I could call her in the future about the drums and she said it was OK to do

so. Any of you fellow drum lovers care to guess what these might be

worth?? She asked me what they might be worth, and I told her I'd have

to see them in person to evaluate them. She told me a friend who develope

d arthritus in his knees gave the drums to her husband. I hope to call her

later in the summer to see this drum set. I have to keep telling myself to be

patient about this. Any feedback would be helpful. thanks.

Patience is a virtue.

Not a value judgment (and it doesn't sound like you were actively searching the obits), but that's a phone call I couldn't make.

I have a friend who is holding on to his deceased brother's Camcos. The only way I could think about taking them off his hands is if he contacted me and said he wanted me to have them.

But it's better for drums to be actively loved than sitting around unused, so more power to you.

I know that feeling...I know an older Gent around this area who has a black WFL "jazzette" set. (I dont know if that early were they even called Jazzette at all) and a very old engraved Black beauty...Every now and then I call him up to ask him if he's ready to sell...Hes answer is always the same: "Just not yet..."

The ludwig Blackrolite was worth 100.00 if in good shape and a nice snare to boot.

You sure that snare was 4 1/2" deep. It sounds like a 5x14 acrolite with black galaxy finish, definitely worth $50.

I don't often quote other peoples posts in toto, but that's about as thoughtful and well-written a response as anyone could make. I can't improve on it so I'm just going to quote it wholesale and give it a big 'Plus 1.'

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Wow!

You guys have balls - even as a firefighter who deals with death on a sometimes daily basis, I would feel like too much of a hearse chaser to make calls like that... but if you can, I hope you nail what you're after.

I think I need to clearify some of this. When I called the lady, she was fine with me calling her. I told her I was apprehensive calling her. She told me it was

OK. We probably talked around 20 minutes. I gave her some background info

about me and my musical experience. After talking with her, I felt the

conversation went very well. I'm in no hurry to get these drums. I told her

about my dad's Gretsch set he bought new in '65, here at the local music store.

Hopefully, this clarifies my situation. She wants me to call her back

in the future.

Ahh right - sorry, I think I got the wrong vibe here.

In that case - I hope the waiting gets those beautiful drums...
