Refinishing a Supra? Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Loading...

Hello all!

So, I got a supra shell with no hardware whatsoever, just a bare shell. It has been stripped and repainted (poorly). I'm thinking of re-stripping it and doing the old powder coat thing as there are several local guys that will do it for under $20. I'll probably throw on some tube lugs and gussy it up a bit. My question to you guys is whether anyone can share their success and / or horror stories in completing similar projects. If you have pictures too, that would be great! How do these sound after they are powder coated? I assume more like the later acrolites?

Here's the one I did: http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=16990&highlight=1967. It sounds great, one of my favorite snares.

Thanks GG. Nice job, it really looks great! I'm struggling a bit with the fact that the cost of all the new parts will likely be around the cost of buying a half decent complete supra. On the other hand, if I just use what I have lying around, it won't be nearly as nice as yours. Did you re-mount the badge or is it badgeless?

Yes, I probably have far more invested in the snare than it is worth...but it looks good and I enjoy playing it, so I guess it's OK with me.

I remounted the badge.

Thanks again GG - it really does look great though. That's what I figure will happen with mine as well, but I'm excited about the project, so I'm going to go for it. Anyone else have any examples?

Hey GG...I saw the link to your snare a while back and I'm following along your lines with one of mine. I ordered some tube lugs, single-flange hoops and a P-86 strainer, to put on an Acrolite shell that I am getting professionally polished. I'll post some pics when I get her all put together.

Mspartacus, I say go for it!

Thanks EMD - A polished acrolite will look sweeeet! Any tips on where to get some hardware on the cheap? Those tube lugs are a pretty penny from what I've seen.

Well, I won the single-flange hoops on eBay a month ago for $50 for the pair, with tension rods and clips...they are the newer style ones, but they are COB! I bought the P86 strainer off of Craigslist for $25, and for the tube lugs...I just ordered them from drummaker.com for $5.85 a piece (on sale) and it looks like they are now $6.30 each. I guess it all starts adding up, but if it sounds and looks good and you like it, then that's all that should matter.

Have seen one stripped to the alu and polished...looked real nice. And talk about a spruce-up that won't change the sound...
