?? regarding a Ludwig twin tom mount and Bass drum spurs Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Hi All,

I have a set of 1963 Ludwigs. It has a mount for twin toms ( the set came

with 2 8 x12 drums) Unlike the later mounts with the L shaped "bar" holder

that inserted into a hole on the drum mount this attaches the drums by

sliding them onto a U shaped device at the top of the mount.

Also the bass drum came with 4 spurs that slid into the drum when not being

used.

The set is Black Oyster Pearl ( Pre Ringo ) 20" Bass, 8 x 12 toms and a 16" Floor Tom. The snare is a 60's something Supraphonic. A wonderful sounding

kit.

My question is that I have seen a lot o kits from that era but haven't come cross that type of holder or spur set up. It might be rare or common I dunno!

If any of you folk could shed some light on this I would appreciate it. Thanks

in advance. BLACKHAWK

The mount that you describe was the earliest of Ludwig's double tom holders, and is period correct for your set.

Thanks Rocketman,

Was that style mount used very long and is is a raity or just and oddity?

It has functioned very well for the 50 years I've used it. Blackhawk

Yours is the early Hollywood kit.

I had one identical to yours from 1965 until 1976. Was odd how one of the 8x12 toms could be tuned so much lower than the other and still produce similar tone. Miss that kit most of all.

That particular style tom holder was around from somewhere in the mid 1950s until approximately 1963.

ive seen that first generation hollywood mount first on a trans badge kit(late 50's) and as late as spring of 65. it should have a wood block spacer that goes between the two toms for support.

i agree about the tuning. i usually play mine one up. but the two 12's can really give a nice tone spread. i was very surprised.

forgot to mention the spurs. usually when you see those disappearing spurs on a classic kit, they seem to be front and rear. i really like those. have a set on a clubdate kit.

I had two sets of disappearing spurs on a 59 trans badge kit. Better for playing, they don't move around too much.

Too many great drums to list here!
