Hey everyone,

Will there be a difference in sound between a Remo coated ambassador and a Remo (coated) vintage ambassador when I use them as a resonant head for the toms?

The only difference between the two is that the "vintage" ones are 2-ply and the "standard" ones are 1-ply.

The vintage ambassadors will have a little more damping too it than a regular ambassador does. The coating seems to wear out quicker on the vintage ambassadors.

I can't say as I've not tied them, but the idea of a two ply reso head doesn't seem that appealing to me. I didn't realize that vintage Ambassadors were two ply actually.

But most of the drummers in 60's - 70's used an ambassador (from then) which is almost identical to the "vintage" ones that are made now. So back then they all used 2-ply reso heads for there toms no?

I may be mistaken but I recall Ambassador heads to have been single ply for as long as I can remember.

I stand corrected or at least to some degree. I just checked out Remo's site and they do state that the first Mylar head was a 7mil / 3mil two ply. Going back to the early 70's I recall an Ambassador as a single ply head.

So that means that the vintage ambassador was 2-ply from 1957 - begining of the 1970 when they went to ambassador 1-ply.

Am I correct?

The 2-ply ambassadors, to my knowledge, didn't last long. In fact, I was really never aware that they were originally 2-ply. As for the 1-ply variety, I've seen these as OEM way back to the early 60's.
