Replacing heads - did I do it right? Last viewed: 52 minutes ago

Although I am primarily a guitar player I bought a ~$700 set of Tama drums at my local music store a few years ago. I just got around to replacing the Tama heads with Remo, as listed. The original resonante heads were just cheap plastic and did not even have labels on them. I moved all the original Tama heads to the resonante side, with the exception of the snare. They sound way better than they did but I am sure if this is the right way to do it. Should I still buy new resonante heads on or will this be ok? I did buy a new resonante for the snare.

Snare 14” Remo Powerstroke 3 Ambassador Fiberskyn batter - Ambassador hazy resonant

Bass 22” Remo Powerstroke 3 Ambassador Fiberskyn batter – original Tama batter to resonant

12” Tom - Remo Emperor clear – original Tama batter to resonant

13” Tom – Remo Emperor clear – original Tama batter to resonant

16” Tom – Remo Emperor clear – original Tama batter to resonant

As long as you got the heads and hoops back on to fit correctly, you've done it right. Everything after that is personal preference.

I compare drum heads, sticks, placement, etc. to getting dressed. As long as the shirt goes on the top and the pants on the bottom, what follows is your own choice.

My kit:
Ludwig Vistalite Big Beat set consisting of:
14” X 22” bass, 16” X 16” floor tom, 8” X 12” ride tom, 9” X 13” ride tom, 5” X 14” snare
Ludwig 201 Speed King bass drum pedal
Ludwig 1124 Spur-lok hit-hat with Ludwig Standard Paiste 14” cymbals (760 & 770 gr) with ching-ring
Two Ludwig Standard S-270 cymbals stands
18” Zildjian crash cymbal (1550 gr) and 20” Zildjian ride cymbal (2130 gr) with CAMCO sizzler
Gibraltar motorcycle seat-style drum throne with backrest

Cool, Thank you. I have replaced all the cymbals and now all the heads on this kit. I just trying to figure out if I need to do more or if it is time to take a break. Thanks again.

Moving batter heads with a couple of years of use on them to the reso side is not something I would do unless I were really low on cash.

I'd get a set of clear Ambassadors (or Aquarian Classic Clears, my favorite, or Evans G1) and be done with it. Then you don't have to wonder if your kit could sound better.

Agree! Was happy with the "Attack" reso head pack from DFD.

Nothing special here but I like them.
