Replacing P83, P85 with P86 Last viewed: 8 hours ago

Loading...

I have several snare drums with either P83 or P85 strainers and I am tired of the two handed engaging and dealing with snare cord. These are all players drums and I am considering replacing all of them with P86 strainers as the hole pattern is the same. What do you think of P86 strainers or might anyone have a better suggestion? Before I buy a half dozen strainers, I would like your opinions.

Thanks!

i think the p86 is a great strainer. ive got a few p83s and 85s that require the old bump under them while re-engaging. the p86 looks super cool and works very smoothly. same holes spacing as you probably know. i have read that there were some problems with the older ones as far as some fastener coming loose. i think the new ones have that problem solved. they can also be purchased new for less than a used p83.

I did hear about that fastener issue. I appreciate your input. Sounds promising. I am looking forward to using fabric straps on all my snares.

Came upon this topic and have great interest in changing over to a better strainer. Wanted to get your opinion.

I have the model that has a black background with white Ludwig lettering on my mid 70's supra.

I have a lot of problems with changes in wire tension literally over night.

A lot may have to do with slip knots giving and wires loosening thus bad sound.

And yeah sometimes I cannot activate the lever as it seems locked. Plus to get the sound I want, seems like I have to really crank the knob all the way.

I understand that this P86 will use a band instead of cord correct?

Do you have to purchase wires that come equipped with a band?

Seems like a better way or so some have said.

Scott - I've been putting P-86's on all the Ludwig supra-style snares that I keep/play. Guys that have bought supra's from me, get one already on the drum. Bottom line: they work! They hold tension well and they're easier to operate and more reliable than the old P-83's (as much as I love those.)

Too many great drums to list here!

If they are good enough for Purdie, they are good enough for me. I will be placing an order shortly. I am sick of snare cord stretching, tying snare cord and dealing with two handed snare engagements!!! Of course I'll save the 83's and 85's should I ever sell one of these drums.
