Is anyone able to give me some tips on how to tune my snare to sound like Ringo's on Magical mystery tour and Sgt Peppers? I know he used a Ludwig Festival but ive also got a ludwig so im hoping someone knows.

Sure. Calfskin head tuned loose with a tea towel over it to muffle the snot out of it. This has always amazed me. Ringo's drums were not great sounds by any stretch of the imagination. They were usually loose and muffled. There are the standout tracks that allow some nice sounds to be captured to tape ... but by and large, they were just muffled thuds. He wasn't known for his warm resonance, for sure.
I think Wado's asking about Ringo's pre-Abbey Road snare sound. Tuned tight as a gnat's a** stretched over a 5-gallon bucket.
Snare is cooking on Rubber Soul. It sounds good to my ears. I still like the Ludwig metals vs jazz fest though...personal preference.
I think Ringo had a great sound and fit the band well. Then again, I'm a fan of 60s Ludwig kits....I have two. I've been listening to Rubber Soul. I love Ringo's stuff actually.
I think his drums usually sounded AMAZING.....
I always thought he got some magic Ludwigs somehow......
Or,was it the tube Neuman (sp?) mics, etc?
Everything was run through mixing boards, processed and reprocessed, reversed taped, etc. You won't capture that sound.
Sorry Rogersling, I gotta respectfully disagree. I think in the matter of drum sounds its all matter of opinion and I think Ringos sounds were fantastic. I dont know about the lack of warm tones, I think even when he used the muffling, it was still warm e.g. "Something". As I said its all matter of opinion and there is no right or wrong answer. New drums are meant to be superior and have better sounds than old ones but I also have to disagree with that and I know Id have some backing otherwise most of you wouldnt be on this site. I do respect your opinion though and if you think Ringo didnt have good sounds then good on you and your no different to me thinking he had great sounds and tones. I think though that he thought well outside the square and didnt think ok im gonna tune my drums to sound how drums "should" sound and instead created new sounds. Anyway sorry about my rant :)
