Road Kill Radio King Work In Progress Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Throwing this link up for my buddy John. He showed his player RK last week and told him I had a similar little sweetie I'd been working on. This was an auction win from last year that I've been messing around with & finally decided to let it be what it was...a gorgeous player Radio King. Who ever owed this por thing before had raped her & left her for dead. Instead of dolling her up, I finally decided to glorify the beauty of her ugly. LOL! I think she's beautiful & this is one of the finest pieces of Maple I've ever worked with! I hope you guys like her! Here's the link.

This is a late 40's Super Gene Krupa Radio King 14x7, got all the hardware with the exception of the badge (Mikey thinks he has one) and the handle for the Clam Shell strainer. The finish is Dark Tung Oil, which was applied several times & sanded back to pop the grain, and several coats of hard wax.

Please excuse my dumba$$ for putting one of the lugs on upside down DOH, was just bolting her up to get a couple progress shots.

Here's a shot of what I started out with. At one point in time the wrap had been removed & the shell was painted white. Whoever had it before me had "sort of" sanded her back & said to hell with it. Took a good bit of time to get her cleaned up & refinished.

Thanks! I just loved the rustic nature of the drum, she has some bumps & bruises but as a whole has aged beautifully. The Maple shell has seasoned to the point where it deserves to be shown. I had to fill a couple places on the rings, but I let that show also. It's funny, most of the restoration projects I've done look better in the pics then they do in person...this one is just the opposite...the pictures don't do her justice. I had plans of finishing this up & putting her up for sale...really don't know if I can do that now. These old RK's get under your skin...you thump the shell on this drum & it just resonates!...magnificent instrument!

Dude, I have it's twin brother sitting in my living room! Congrats on a great restoration and on a great old drum. I just got in a 8" x 15" Leedy Broadway that I'm going to give the same treatment to.

Nice job bro! Great drum.

John

PS - Check your pm's. Waiting for a response...

Just sent the info brother. Yeah, you showing your RK player made me want to show mine! I love the natural, rustic look of old aged/patina hardware on beautiful wood. Even on my new builds the hardware takes back-seat to the drum...to me, it's horrific seeing 12 lbs. of shiny chrome hardware, hiding a beautiful wood shell! It's called a drum, not a hardware...guess I'm getting old.

It's funny, I sit here at night & just look at these resto projects & imagine them as they once were...but truthfully, I prefer the way they look now. It's especially cool when the entire drum ages at the same time, I was lucky to get this one with only the badge & lever missing. It was in crap shape but all the parts had aged together...this one is definitely special!

Yeah, but you'll always be my first! LOL! my my my I feel flushed Toilet, well not that kind of flushed...

Not sure why you can't see the images, I have this set up as a public album on "DisgraceBook"...or better yet "Cut-n-PasteBook"...I just use the damn thing as a staging site to upload pics & write copy. Essentially it's a free FTP/website. If you don't want to put any personal info out there Bunny, just establish a dummy eMail account thru gmail, yahoo, whatever. Use that as a front for your SuckFaceBook account. Make up a bunch of Bull$hit for the personal info crap & Presto!...you're a social networking master! LOL! My motto is "fu@k'em if they can't take a joke"...I hate the site, so I use it to my advantage. I'll downsize some of the pics tomorrow & upload them here so anyone having any issues can check them out.
