The Big R period bottom hoop was indeed an oval badge era introduction. Late serial oval badge drums should have this style hoop, especially anything in the 5xxxx range. I believe this will also be found on drums in the upper 4xxxx range as well. The same is true of the snare frame. I have Oval Badge drum number 53004, all original, late oval period, and it has both the Big R style bottom hoop and the Big R style frame. And it is all original.

Ploughman!...

You are indeed the "Big R" guy... and with that said, I'll defer to you on the bottom hoop, contingent on the serial number of course! With NONE of my Dynasonics being older than 1968, well... Course we have all seen MANY Dynasonics with wrong and/or missing parts too! That seems to be MORE the case than not usually.

Once we know what the serial number is, well... that will tell the tale. That will determine what bottom hoop/guards should be on the drum!

Okay!...

Turns out that the serial number on this Dynasonic is #41551, dating this drum at 1973, Fullerton CA production. I think this number is too low/early for that bottom hoop to be correct.. however!.. it could also be right on the "cusp" of the changeover too. We all know how the drum companies were/are with regard to build/parts! Just sayin'. So with that determined...

In my opinion, this drum could go either way! BEST on your sale gregory2012!!

Good call Tommy P! Gregory may actually have one of the first Fullerton Dyna's to feature newer Big R style snare hoop. Which snare frame it originally had still remains a mystery. I personally may have one of the last Fullerton oval-badge Dyna's (pic attached). Serial 55xxx with Big R style snare hoop and snare frame (late 1974). I don't think there are any Fullerton 56xxx numbers.

As you mention, this transition or changeover period is confusing. All the Dyna's pictured in the last swivo-era catalog (73-74) have the old snare guards, and the next catalog is all Big R Dyna's, so these transition Dyna's are never pictured anywhere.

Kudo's to you and Ploughman for your dating skills.

Thanks for all the help guys. It's nice when everyone is an "authority" on the subject. I'm not! Anyway, the drum sold and I think the buyer got an amazing deal!

I have all the original shells which (1972) have been sanded inside, holes plugged etc. Beautiful maple under that "grey" spray.

The original had a dark brown "wood like" finish. Now it has the same finish, hand stained maple veneer and lacquer coated. Just have to buff them up and I'll add all newer style hardware.

"Did anyone SCREAM the word 'vintage kill' yet?"

I need some help identifying some legs. See separate post.
